Meghan Markle invited a number of celebrities on her big day with Prince Harry. Some claimed she invited Oprah Winfrey even if they didn’t know each other personally. Meanwhile, others said they have been close. In fact, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sat for an interview with her for CBS in March. Here’s what you need to know about their friendship.
Meghan Markle and Oprah only met once before the royal wedding
Oprah Winfrey was the first one to reach out to Meghan Markle after her best friend, Gayle King, made an initial introduction. In March 2018, Winfrey was in London and two months later she found herself a seat at Prince Harry and Markle’s royal wedding.
Their first meeting must have sealed the deal because she scored a royal wedding invite, SCMP reported.
Oprah befriended Meghan’s mom
Oprah Winfrey befriended Meghan Markle’s mom, Doria Ragland, when she was first swept up in the media storm. When Oprah met Doria for the first time, she asked the latter to bring a yoga mat for her in case they wanted to do yoga on the lawn. Markle’s mom is a yoga instructor.
During their meal, they enjoyed a dessert made with kumquats. Doria loved it that Winfrey sent her home with a basket of fruit picked from her own garden.
Oprah worked with Meghan’s husband Prince Harry
Oprah and Prince Harry worked together for the emotional Apple TV+ documentary The Me You Can’t See. Oprah and the royal prince did not only co-host the show, they also teamed up as executive producers on the project.
In the documentary, Prince Harry shared a lot of things with Oprah including his struggles after losing his mom, Princess Diana. Prince Harry said he would drink a week’s worth of alcohol on a Friday. It was not because he was enjoying it, but he was trying to mask something, Evening Standard reported.
He also accused the royal family of “total neglect” for denying them help. According to Prince Harry, they asked for assistance from his family due to the attacks aimed at them online, but they didn’t get the help they needed.
The Duke of Sussex said they tried to make things work for four years possibly to stay with the royal family and do their job. However, Markle was struggling to the point that she had suicidal thoughts. So, they decided it was time to leave.
Oprah said she only has 3 close pals and Meghan isn’t one of them
In an interview on Making Space with Hoda Kotb podcast, Oprah Winfrey revealed she only has three close friends and surprisingly, it didn’t include Meghan Markle. According to Winfrey, she kept a small inner circle and hadn’t expanded it.
Markle’s close friends included Maria Shriver, Bob Greene and Gayle King. She’s been friends with Maria and Gayle for 42 years already. Meanwhile, she wrote the foreword of Greene’s 2008 book The Best Life Diet.
