Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have broken several royal traditions when they tied the knot on May 19, 2018, according to a report.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s romance has been followed by millions of people worldwide. Millions of people also witnessed their exchange of “I Do’s.” According to Express, they broke several traditions to have their dream wedding.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding date
Queen Elizabeth II’s great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria didn’t approve of May weddings. She believed that it’s not the best date to tie the knot.
“Marry in May, rue the day,” she said.
The superstitious rhyme discourages the brides to marry in May because those who do will allegedly have an unlucky marriage. Prince Harry and Markle were not afraid because they tied the knot on May 19, 2018.
Many predicted that the couple’s marriage would not last three years or more. However, the couple just celebrated their third wedding anniversary in May and they are still going strong.
No church wedding for divorced
The royal family is very traditional and marriages involving divorcees have been problematic for them. Princess Margaret wanted to marry a divorced man and it caused an uproar.
Prince Charles got re-married to Camilla Parker Bowles who was previously married to Andrew Parker Bowles. The move also raised some eyebrows.
Prince Edward had it worse. He abdicated the throne to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson who was twice-divorced at the time.
But the rules were more relaxed for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Prince Harry was the first to become the royal family member to marry a divorcee in church. Meghan Markle was previously married to Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013.
Meghan’s father didn’t give her away
One of the major-tradition-breaking moments during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding was her dad’s absence. Thomas Markle Sr. was supposed to give his daughter away. However, he canceled his attendance because he had heart surgery and was still recovering at the time.
The Queen allowed Prince Charles to walk Meghan down the aisle.
Unfortunately, following the royal wedding, things between Meghan and her dad went awry. According to Markle Sr., he has been trying to reach out to his daughter and she cut their connections.
Thomas hasn’t met his grandkids Archie and baby Lili. He initially said he was planning to take the matter to court and sue Prince Harry and Markle because as a grandparent he has the right to see his grandchildren.
However, in a recent interview with Sunrise, he decided to not push with his plans. Markle Sr. decided to just wait for Meghan and Prince Harry to take their children to him.
