Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got candid in their interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they admitted that race was on the royal family’s mind, especially when they were expecting Archie.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry broke their silence and spoke their truth in their interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired Sunday. During their conversation, Prince Harry and Markle admitted that the royal family has been talking about their child’s skin color when they were still expecting him.
Meghan Markle on racist conversation within the royal household
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle both mentioned that race had become a topic when the duchess was still pregnant with their first child. The royals were allegedly concerned about the skin color of their child.
“In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘you won’t be given security, not gonna be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” Markle said.
Markle said those conversations were only relayed to her from her husband, Prince Harry, from the conversation he had with his family. She added it was hard to see those “compartmentalized conversations.”
The duchess declined to drop a name who made such concerns because she understood it would be “very damaging” to their reputation that there were several conversations surrounding Archie’s complexion. Prince Harry corroborated his wife’s claim. He also said it was brought up early and often, TMZ added.
Meghan was silenced
In the teaser released days before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview was aired, Oprah Winfrey asked Markle if she was silent or being silenced. The Duchess of Sussex admitted she was being silenced, but the firm promised her protection. However, Markle didn’t feel that the institution was protecting her.
“It was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected but that they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family,” she added.
Prince Harry’s wife made it clear that there are two separate things in the royal family — the family and those who run the institution. She stressed that it should be compartmentalized. Markle also said the Queen has always been wonderful to her.
Meghan Markle admitted that she didn’t know what she signed up to when she married Prince Harry because she grew up not knowing much about the royal family.
