Meghan Markle and Prince Harry visited New York City for Global Citizen Live last month, but a royal expert called the said trip a “fake royal tour.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are among the celebrities who support vaccine equity. In September they flew to the Big Apple for the Global Citizen Live. However, before the day of the event, they made several engagements in the city. Royal commentator and journalist Ryan Sacerdoti criticized the royal couple for the way they did the tour.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s NYC trip criticized
Sacerdoti weighed in on Prince Harry and Markle’s recent trip to New York. During their travel, the pair were dressed up, visited a school and even met some of the local officials. The move raised eyebrows with Sacerdoti saying despite what they do it was not a royal tour but a “fake royal tour working holiday.”
“Now they are not part of the working Royal Family it was fascinating to see them engage in that sort of fake royal tour,” Sacerdoti told Express.
“It was basically just a holiday in New York and it turns out, from the concealed microphones and the cameraman following them who wasn’t known to most of the other press lot there, it seems it was a working trip.”
He considered it a working trip because the couple brought their own camera crew to film the outing for their upcoming Netflix documentary. Sacerdoti added that if they were filming a reality show o similar then the trip couldn’t have been further from a royal tour.
He acknowledged that the people are interested in Prince Harry and Markle because they are celebrities. However, for him, the attention is not the same when it comes to seeing the royal family.
He pointed out that during royal tours the streets are lined up with people who want to see what is happening. However, Prince Harry and Markle only met lower-level officials and an underwhelming crowd.
Sky News Australia host also slammed Sussexes’ visit to NYC
Sky News Australia host Andrew Bolt said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit to New York City last month was self-serving and hypocritical. He also said it was so shameless and fake.
Just like Sacerdoti, Bolt felt that the royal couple’s three-day trip was orchestrated to mimic a royal tour. They have security, media roped off and they arranged meetings with some dignitaries.
Prince Harry toured the observatory on floors 100 and 102 of the One World Trade Center with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and city Mayor Bill de Blasio. They also visited the 9/11 memorial.
The royal couple also had a discussion with the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield about COVID-19, mental health, and racial justice.
However, Bolt slammed the meeting. For him, they all felt self-important. He added that the tour was not only full of empty gestures but of obvious hypocrisy too.
