Moderna to charge $25 -$37 for COVID vaccine

The United States vaccine Moderna will cost $25- $37, its Chief Executive Officer Stephane Bancel told German weekly Welt am Sonntag (WamS). The vaccine is proved to be 94.5% effective in preventing COVID-19. The data is based on the last stage of the clinical trial of the vaccine.

The Moderna chief said that their vaccine costs about the same as a flu shot. The price range lies between $10 and $50.

“Nothing is signed yet, but we’re close to a deal with the EU Commission. We want to deliver to Europe and are in constructive talks,” Bancel told WamS, adding it was just a “matter of days” until a contract would be ready.

Effectiveness of Moderna

The early data of the vaccine from its last stage of trials shows 94.5% effective against the COVID-19. It is only second to give promising results after Pfizer and its partner BioNtech. Pfizer and Moderna are planning to apply to the Food and Drug Administration for emergency authorization to begin public vaccination.

Pfizer, along with BioNtech, said that their vaccine is 90% effective, comparatively lesser than Moderna’s result. Both the countries are first to announce these interim data about their effectiveness.

Other vaccines

Ten other vaccines are nearing the third phase of their trials. These include vaccines from countries like Australia, Britain, China, India, and Russia. More than 50 candidates of vaccines are in the early stages of testing.

Russia has claimed 92% effectiveness for its Sputnik V vaccine candidate, which is still in the mid-stages of trials. The data from AstraZeneca Plc will likely be released next. Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson said that it’s on track to release the data at year-end or next year.

While Pfizer and Moderna have already applied for the emergency use authorization request to the US FDA, other vaccines are still applying or planning to apply. Serum Institute of India, which is testing the Oxford vaccine, says that it will be available for elderly and health care workers by February 2021.

Coronavirus cases

The number of cases worldwide has reached 55.6 million. Also, 1.34 million deaths have occurred. Meanwhile, the United States has recorded the highest death toll.

On Friday, Moncef Slaoui, the chief scientist for Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration’s program to accelerate the development of vaccines and treatments for COVID-19, said that if any early vaccine candidates received permission for emergency use, immunization could begin sometime in December.

The U.S. government will buy the vaccines and give them to the public for free. But both companies expect to profit, and not to provide their products at cost.
