Minecraft dev studio Mojang is rebranding itself. Eat is currently “playing with ideas” for new games to publish.
The company, now called Mojang Studios, changed its branding to reflect the bigger scale of the game dev company. Mojang Studios is not a single team located in Sweden anymore.
The Mojang team has branches in other areas of Sweden, together teams in USA, Japan, Canada, and United Kingdom. The announcement came out today through an blog post on the website itself.
Mojang Studios looking for brand new game ideas
According to the announcement, they are entering the 20s as “a multi-title, multi-location company.” What’s more important for the players, however, is the content Mojang Studios has in store.
With Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons out of the way, the team is looking to make more. They noted that they are planning a feature film, an epic live show, and “with ideas for brand new games.”
“We will say this: play is at the heart of Mojang Studios,” says the post. “It’s the blocky backbone of our games, the core of our development philosophy, and even entangled in our name (which roughly translates to “gadget” in lovely, old-timey Swedish). And now, finally, it’s squarely planted in our new, modular logo.”
Minecraft is still the studio’s flagship title, but it seems the company will go wider. Before the Microsoft acquisition of the company in 2014, the company only had two other titles. These were Scrolls, now called Caller’s Bane, and game jam experiment Crown and Council.
Even with the biggest game title in the world within its portfolio, Mojang Studios’ list of games is slim. Even after its acquisition, the company focused on Minecraft spinoffs so far.
New logo for Minecraft dev can hint at new toys
The announcement of the Mojang rebranding also came with a few weird details. The logo itself comes in a gif format of a few blocks adjusting to form their company name. They call these “Mojangs,” which seem LEGO-esque in their uses.
Players and pundits alike have no idea what their use is at the moment. Speculations tell that these blocks can be physical toys for Microsoft’s augmented reality. There is no concrete evidence about them right now.
The studio then went on to thank the community for the past 11 years of play.
“When we talk about developing new games, and find (or invent!) entirely new avenues for creativity, know that Minecraft and its community will always be at the center of our universe.”
Mojang is likely moving forward with more games for the upcoming years. Minecraft Dungeons is the next title for the studio, coming out on May 26.
