Jared Leto plays the titular role of Morbius.
The latest film release from Sony and Marvel, Spider-Man: No Way Home, continues to dominate the box office. Amid the celebrations for its massive success, though, a setback for the studios has emerged through its new and upcoming movie, Morbius.
Reuters said that the Jared Leto-led film will no longer make its winter premiere. This comes as the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has spread further across the globe.
Sony released an official statement on Monday, providing new details about the movie’s release this spring.
Morbius and its new premiere schedule
In the announcement from the studio, Morbius will hit the big screen on April 1, 2022. The film has already had several push-backs in terms of its premiere due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Filming and reshooting ended in 2020. But, upon the emergence of the coronavirus crisis, Sony moved the official release date to March 2021.
Two months before the set date, though, the studio announced another push-back for the movie’s premiere. It was moved for an October 2021 release before setting it to drop in January 2022.
About the new Sony-Marvel film
Morbius follows a scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease. In his attempt to cure himself, he tries to utilise a “dangerous cure,” resulting in him becoming a living vampire.
Jared Leto plays the role of Dr. Michael Morbius. Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson, and Jared Harris join the lead star in the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The director of the film is Daniel Espinosa. As for the production companies, Columbia Pictures produced the material in association with Marvel Entertainment.
Trailers for the Sony-Marvel film are also now available. Through the materials, Michael Keaton appears to have reprised his role as Adrian Toomes or Vulture, who happens to be in Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well.
Is it part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
With Keaton’s inclusion in the film, many speculate that Marvel characters from the universe under Sony have links to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Alongside Vulture’s appearance, the trailers also feature street signs, calling Spider-Man a murderer.
Comic Book previously reported, however, that there are other Easter eggs in the teaser materials, suggesting a more complicated narrative. As noted, the upcoming movie appeared to have used two logos from The Amazing Spider-Man film series.
In addition to these, the same trailers show a Spider-Man poster, wherein the character dons the costume Tobey Maguire wore in the first Spider-Man movies. Furthermore, Morbius himself mentions the name of Venom in the last moments of the teaser materials.
Accordingly, the publication asserted that Morbius is “not set within the proper” MCU. It appears to be more associated with Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, where the three Spider-Man characters, as well as Venom, are.
