Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train dropped to #2 in its 13th weekend as Gintama: The Final, the new anime film of Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama manga, ranked #1 in its opening weekend.
The long reign of Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train in the Japanese box office has finally ended.
The movie topped for 12 consecutive weekends making it the newest highest-grossing film of all time in Japan.
As Gintama: The Final movie opened in Japan last Friday, it pulled back Mugen Train to No.2 on its 13th week.
“Gintama: The Final” overtaking Tanjiro
Last Friday, January 8, Gintama: The Final opened in Japan. The film combined with new story elements and is based on the finale of the original manga.
Furthermore, a new net anime special is inspired by the manga titled Gintama The Semi-Final. Its story is a two-episode prequel to the film.
On the online dTV service on January 15, the net anime will premiere exclusively in Japan.

In 2003, Sorachi’s original “science-fiction period-drama comedy” manga began and ended in June 2019.
It was circulated with over 55 million copies, and in July 2018, the latest anime series premiered.
The manga inspired various original video anime (OVA). Along with it are two live-action films and two live-action net spinoffs. Viz Media published the first 23 volumes of the manga in English.
Over its first four days, Gintama: The Final sold 384,220 tickets for 531,350,320 yen (about $5.1 million).
On Friday, it sold 113,278 tickets for 156,002,340 yen, 114,158 tickets on Saturday for 162,233,520 yen, 90,177 tickets on Sunday for 125,259,980 yen, and on Monday, 66,607 tickets for 87,854,480 yen.

The record-breaker slowly stepping down
On the 13th weekend of Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, it dropped to #2.
The film has surpassed Hayao Miyazaki’s 2002 Spirited Away. It is Mugen Train‘s last rival for all-time highest earnings in Japanese box office history.
The Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie kicked-off screening in 38 IMAX theaters in Japan on October 16.
It immediately earned the highest opening weekend globally for the October 16-18 weekend.
Moreover, in its first three days, the film sold 3,424,930 tickets and earned 4,623,117,450 yen (about US$43.85 million) in Japan.
The film earned over 1,268,724,700 yen (about US$12.03 million) from the 910,507 tickets sold on its opening day alone. This made the movie the highest weekday opening day in Japan ever.
It was on Saturday, December 26, when Mugen Train began holding immersive MX4D and 4DX screenings.
As of this time, Mugen Train has sold a cumulative total of 26.21 million tickets for 35.7 billion yen (about US$343 million).
Meanwhile, dropping from number three to number four in its third weekend is Studio 4°C’s anime film of Akihiro Nishino’s Poupelle of Chimney Town (Entotsu-chō no Poupelle) picture book.
The film earned 322,998,700 (about US$3.13 million) and ranked at #4 in its opening weekend. The film hit the big screens in Japan on December 25.
