Mark Harmon has reportedly planned his retirement. Hence, fans are wondering regarding the character who will replace him in NCIS.
At the moment, NCIS is one of the most popular television dramatizations running. NCIS has produced 17 distinct seasons for 17 years, each with top-notch ratings and millions of viewers.
Both critics and fans would certainly agree that this addictive investigator show will never get old. Above all, because of its versatile stars, it will always snare everyone for an additional installment. However, it seems like one of the NCIS cast who is apparently growing older will leave the show in the near future.
NCIS star Mark Harmon plans for retirement
Reports have circulated previously regarding the retirement of Mark Harmon, who plays Leroy Gibbs in the NCIS series. Allegedly, Harmon desires to retire and move to Montana because he got tired of his work as an actor.
NCIS executive producer, Steven Binder has fueled these speculations after disclosing that Harmon’s character Gibbs is close to a breakdown. The showrunner shared,
“There’s only so much one man can take. Like you said, he’s taken a lot. He’s getting close to redlining.”

Mark Harmon will still return in NCIS season 18
Fortunately, Mark Harmon will still return to reprise his role as Gibbs in NCIS upcoming season 18. Reportedly, Harmon signed a deal with CBS TV Studios around the same time as the renewal was announced. Moreover, this indicates that Harmon will retain his spot as executive producer on NCIS spinoff series NCIS: New Orleans.
One of the show’s executive producers further commented on Harmon’s role with,
“He’s constantly evolving. I think he’s going to be taking some risks and chances he never would have taken before.”
Who will replace Gibbs
However, what goes on beyond season 18 remains uncertain. Some fans think that Harmon is already too old to be an agent. Thus, questions have emerged about who will take over the actor’s part if he retires.
Several devotees seem to favor Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) to be the new Gibbs. One fan took to social media to comment,
“I think if anyone would replace him it would be McGee. McGee wouldn’t be a bad boss. We’ve seen bits of it in the past.”
However, there have also been rumors of Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) replacing Gibbs. After returning to the show’s 17th installment, many viewers believed that this could be a possibility. Nevertheless, NCIS has not commented on these speculations just yet. The same goes for Sean Murray and Cote de Pablo.
