Netflix series The New Legends of Monkey received significant praise after premiering in April 2018. Although it did not fare much to older viewers, it still geared towards kids and teens. Thus, devotees of the action series thirsted for a second season.
After waiting for more than two years, fans have finally been graced with the series renewal. Netflix had announced the show’s second run after commencing production in September 2019.
Reportedly, the 10-episode installment will premiere on the streaming platform on August 7. However, it will only be available in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada as of August.
If the series follows the same pattern as season 1, the second season will be ready for stream in Australia and New Zealand between April and June 2021.
The New Legends of Monkey is a series partially inspired by the Japanese series Monkey, which itself is based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West. It has high fantasy elements and is based in a world where demons have taken over the earthly realm.
The demons ruled the land and tormented human beings. The gods, on the other hand, are helpless since they have been forced into hiding.
As a result, a scholar hatched a plan to bring together some warriors and monks to free the legendary Monkey King. The character was imprisoned under a mountain 500 years ago.
Netflix’s official synopsis of the series reads:
“A valiant girl liberates the Monkey King — a god long trapped in stone — in a quest to find seven sacred scrolls and save the world from evil.”
In the previous season, the scholar who was supposed to free the Monkey King died in the hands of powerful demons. Hence, his adopted daughter, Tripitaka, continued his mission.
After venturing into the dangerous world, Tripitaka freed the Monkey King from imprisonment. Consequently, the duo returned to town and enlisted the help of Pigsy and Sandy, who are gods in disguise.
In the forthcoming season, the group will venture out into the world to retrieve lost, ancient scrolls of wisdom that have the power to purge the land and rid it of demons.
The main protagonists will return for season 2. This includes Chai Hansen, who plays Monkey King, as well as Luciane Buchanan, Josh Thompson, and Emilie Cocquerel.
Moreover, some of the recurring casts will also reprise their roles. The roster includes Blakiston, Josh McKenzie, Jordan Mooney, Rachel House, Daniel Watterson, and Bryony Skillington.
