The kids, Miles and Flora Wingrave, give her one advice upon her arrival to the manor: “You have to promise me that you’ll stay in your room. Don’t leave your room at night.”
That’s because there’s a Lady in the Lake who poses a constant threat to Bly’s residents.
Aside from her, other ghosts are roaming the halls of the manor. Some of them are threatening, while some are harmless.

Here are each of the trapped ghost’s background stories. There will be a bit of some spoiler ahead.
The faceless boy with a doll mask
He was in the second episode and third episode of The Haunting of Bly Manor. His death is possibly the most heartbreaking death of the entire Netflix show.
The boy was a victim of the Lady in the Lake after she saw him sleeping in one of the rooms in the manor.
Peter Quint
An attractive, yet bad guy, Peter Quint’s backstory wasn’t shown until the latter part of the show. He was Flora and Miles’ Uncle Henry Wingrave’s assistant, who falls in love with the former au pair, Rebecca Jessel.
People thought he stole money from the Wingrave family, but what really happened to him was getting killed in the hands of the Lady in the Lake.
Upon his death, Peter realized he couldn’t get out of the halls, so he convinced Ms. Jessel into his scheme to possess Miles and Flora so they could live together.
Woman in the Attic
She was seen in the second episode of The Haunting of Bly Manor. The woman had a pink dress and dark hair but didn’t have a face.
In the seventh episode, Peter showed her to the Miles and Flora, telling them that if they can’t give him and Ms. Jessel their bodies, they will have the same fate as the faceless woman.
Later, it was found out that she was Perdita, Viola’s sister, who died in the attic after Viola’s ghost got her revenge. More of Viola’s story later.
Ms. Jessel
Rebecca Jessel was the first au pair before Dani arrived on the manor.
The ghosts of Bly Manor destroyed her life. However, her death wasn’t because of the Lady in the Lake or the most obvious suspects.
Instead, her love, Peter Quint, killed her. She allowed Peter to possess her and test the limits of his power and later, betrayed her.
Peter took over her body and sunk her into the lake as she was “tucked away” in a memory.
Mrs. Hannah Grose
Mrs. Hannah Grose is the housekeeper of the manor who was killed just before Dani arrives. In the fourth episode of The Haunting of Bly Manor, it was found out when she gets lost in her memories.
Her journey became of the most powerful reflection of Bly’s ghosts, from denial to realization to acceptance.
Peter Quint possessed Miles’ body, which led him to kill her.
Mrs. Grove was “tucked in” her memories until she could release herself from it and help the others at Bly Manor.
The star of “The Haunting of Bly Manor”: Lady in the Lake
Viola, the ghost lady who leaves muddy footprints, is the former matriarch of Bly Manor.
After becoming sick, she was killed by her jealous sister, Perdita, the faceless woman, so she takes over the fortune and the home of the family.
A trunk full of Viola’s valuables were thrown into the lake, which led to her final form as the Lady in the Lake.
