Netflix is making a ‘Conan the Barbarian’ TV show

Netflix is in talks to produce Conan the Barbarian shows to establish itself more than just a streaming company. This venture may help Netflix become a much bigger brand with plans for live-action and animated series.

Netflix is now moving towards making itself a production house at an international level. It is producing movies and TV shows with many famous stars and adaptations. Some of Netflix’s plans even include adaptations of Roald Dahl novels, Chronicles of Narnia, and the comics of the publisher Millarworld.

Conan, an icon in pop culture

Conan the barbarian is a character created by Robert E. Howard, for Weird Tales magazine, in 1932. Since its creation, it has dramatically influenced pop culture. Because of its popularity, more than 1,000 comic books, 100 novels, three live-action movies, and two TV series and video games have reiterated the character. Also known as Conan the Cimmerian, actors such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Momoa played this iconic role.

Conan was the character who put Arnold as an international superstar in the map of movies, thanks to the film Conan the Barbarian (1982) and the sequel Conan the Destroyer (1984). In 2011, the Conan movie reboot came, where Jason Momoa played the role.

There are video games inspired by Conan’s story, such as the MMO Age of Conan, arrived in 2008, 2018’s Conan Exiles, and 2019’s Conan Unconquered. Funcom is bringing a multiplayer Co-op game called Conan Chop Chop.

Netflix, the house of adaptations

Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler’s Pathfinder Media is the first in a deal between Netflix and Conan Properties International, owned by Malmberg’s Cabinet Entertainment. The pact gives Netflix the exclusive option to acquire rights to the Conan literary library. Netflix can also produce a movie and TV shows with Conan.

Frederick Malmberg produced the 2011 Conan movie reboot with Jason Momoa. The movie became a terrible flop, grossing only $64 million worldwide from a budget of over $90 million.

The streaming giant agreed for a deal between it and Pathfinder media to produce Conan shows and movies. Their plans for the project include live TV shows, animated TV shows, and movies.

Currently, Conan character’s licensed rights are with Frederik Malmberg’s Conan Properties International. This Conan property is a property of Malmberg’s Cabinet entertainment. Netflix struck a deal with Malmberg and Mark Wheeler’s Pathfinder media for license and production. The producers would announce this project officially soon.

As of now, the company is looking for screenwriters to make a story for them for the live-action and animated adaptations. They are also looking for a director to command these projects.
