Netflix renews ‘Umbrella Academy’ for season 3 unlike ‘AJ and the Queen’

Netflix has reportedly decided to renew the third season of Umbrella Academy even before the release of season 2.

Umbrella Academy created quite a stir when its first season dropped on Netflix. According to the streaming giant, the show was watched by 45 million member households. Thus, it did not come quite a shock when the platform renewed it for season two.

Umbrella Academy’s season 3 renewal status

It looks like Netflix is anticipating big things for the Umbrella Academy’s upcoming second season. This is because the streaming service has reportedly decided to renew the third season even before the release of season two.

The show has also brought two writers, Lauren Otero and Elizabeth Padden, on board for the third installment. Otero is famous for her work on Girl Meets World, and the Amazing Undone. On the other hand, Padden is well-known from her creations like Future Man and DirectTV’s Ice.

Steve Blackman will also become the season’s showrunner. He recently signed with Netflix an overall output deal. This means that he’s going to be producing new content for Netflix as well as continuing his other commitments.

More about Umbrella Academy’s season 3

There have been speculations that the reason for the show’s early renewal is due to the COVID-19 disruption. It sounds quite ironic, but if viewed from a wider perspective, it appears as the best decision for the series.

Giving an early order would allow the team to work on pre-production at home. They would then be able to hit the ground running once productions start up again.

Since details are scarce regarding the plot of Umbrella Academy’s season two, there is also no certainty about the third installment’s storyline. The same goes for the cast and release schedule.

More about season 2

In season two, fans will meet the Hargreeves kids once again in a brand new time and location. They will likely attempt to deal with their sister Vanya, who caused the apocalypse. Since she will continue to remain a threat, the kids will probably figure a way to help her.

Along with the renewal news of season two, Netflix announced that the same cast would reprise their roles. This means that fans will once again see Ellen Page (Vanya), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Five), and Justin Min (Ben).

Production on the second season began in the summer of 2019. According to showrunner Steve Blackman, the team is continuing to work on post-production on the Paramount lot, despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. With this at hand, it is largely expected that the new season will arrive sometime this year.
