Netflix has decided to renew its original comedy series Atypical for its fourth and final season.
Netflix series Atypical successfully straddled the entertainment world, with respectable viewership, devoted fan following and solid critical acclaim. It has made viewers laugh and cry as they followed the 19-year-old Sam on the autism spectrum. Predominantly, the show made the fans ponder about what it really means to be normal.
Netflix confirms renewal
For the past several years, the thought-provoking and well-received drama from Netflix has been an underdog in the film realm. Nonetheless, several devotees have still considered it as a rare hidden gem. Thus, after four months of Atypical’s third season release, Netflix decided to renew it for its fourth and final season.
Alongside the renewal was a short clip confirming it’s the final season. The caption stated,
“They’ve brought you laughs, tears, hugs and homies. Now see how the story concludes. Atypical. The Final Season.”
Atypical joins a very short list of Netflix original comedy series that reached season four. Some have referred to this tactic as Netflix canceling a show. However, for fans, this is good as it allows the creators to adequately wrap up a show rather than leaving it open and unfinished.

Atypical creator sentiments about the forthcoming season
The creator, at the same time executive producer Robia Rashid expressed his sentiments regarding the show’s end. Rashid said,
“I’m thrilled we’ll be doing a season four of Atypical. While I’m so sad to be nearing the end of this series, I am extremely grateful to have been able to tell this story. Our fans have been such beautiful, vibrant supporters of this show.”
He proceeded to thank all of the viewers who opened their hearts to Sam’s voice and stories, as well as to the entire Gardner family. The creator hoped that even after the series ends, people will still tell funny, emotional stories from underrepresented points of view.
What to expect
With the final season, all the remaining plot threads are expected to be wrapped up. Fans will likely see Casey’s life shift significantly as she signs up with Coach Crowley to join UCLA. As with Sammy, it seems like he’s going to spend the final season moving into an apartment with Zahid.
All of the cast are set to reprise their role for the fourth and final season. This means that fans will witness the return of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keir Gilchrist, Bridgette Lundy-Paine, Amy Okuda, Michael Rapaport, Nik Dodani, Jenna Boyd and Fivel Stewart.
As of press time, only a broad 2021 release date has been given. However, with the filming schedule likely to wrap up towards the end of 2020, devotees will probably see season 4 release on Netflix in the first two quarters of 2021. This means anytime between January 2021 and June 2021.
