New Amsterdam is one of the many TV shows that was affected by the pandemic. Its season 2 finale did not go as planned. How will this affect season 3, and what can fans expect?
NBC’s medical drama series New Amsterdam wrapped up its second season without following its original plans. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, production stopped for the series, and they had to change plans at the last minute.
They even canceled a pandemic-themed episode after people in the show’s cast and crew, including recurring guest star Daniel Dae Kim, contracted the virus.
Now fans are wondering how things will turn out for the show’s third run, especially since plans have been altered.
The original plan
In an interview with TV Guide, series creator and executive producer David Schulner revealed their original plan for the season 2 finale.
It turns out that they were planning to put a hurricane plot for the finale. The team was supposed to head over to the Dominican Republic to shoot scenes of helping out after a hurricane.
“The hurricane episode was supposed to be their huge cliffhanger. [The doctors] were going to a failing hospital to help — it was going to be a huge cliffhanger, life and death, people’s jaws would have dropped. Now they’re going to have to wait before jaws drop again,” Schulner said.
But since none of the original plans played out, the series ended with different cliffhangers, including that of Dr. Floyd Reynold’s (Jocko Sims) storyline. Fans will have to wait for season 3 to find out what happens next to the San Francisco situation.
There’s also the arrival of Cassian Shin (Kim), which may be Dr. Helen Sharpe’s (Freema Agyeman) new love interest. The stop-start relationship of Dr. Sharpe and Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) is said to be put behind for now.
Cassian and Max are expected to butt heads as well, especially if the former starts to get cozy with Max’s lady. But then again, Schulner said that Max might not care about it.
What to expect in season 3?
Schulner revealed that it’s not clear yet on how things are going to unfold in season 3. They have scheduled opening the writers’ room again this June, so things aren’t finalized yet.
“All our plans have been blown out of the window,” Schulner said. “In Season 3 we have to rethink everything.” Their priorities are going to change after this pandemic.
Moreover, he noted that they are not going to force storylines considering the current situation of the world.
As of now, they are starting from scratch so anything can happen. They may even change up the initial plan to not add any more new characters in season 3. And will Dr. Reynolds return or is he gone for good?
Fans will have to stay tuned for more updates on New Amsterdam season 3.
