Iconic modern filmmaker Christopher Nolan will soon begin making his new film. However, he will not be working with Warner Bros. this time.
It may be shocking to know, but it’s true. Christopher Nolan will work with Universal for his new film project based on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, also known as “the father of the atomic bomb.”
Christopher Nolan new film details
The reason for switching production companies is quite evident for those who know about what happened in December 2020.
When Warner Bros. announced to release its movies day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max, the decision faced a lot of criticism. And among those who were complaining was Christopher Nolan as well.
Nolan had mentioned that Warner Bros’s decision was wrong for the movies and theaters because the theatrical run of any new release was restricted while making them immediately available for streaming.
Overall, the Dunkirk director disapproved of this approach and eventually decided to go with a new company.
The filmmaker of last year’s Tenet will work with Universal for his new film. He did interact with other studios before finally closing the deal with the company behind the F9 franchise and many other hit titles.
However, Christopher Nolan presented specific terms and conditions in front of the studio.
As per the outlet The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan requested an equal marketing budget. Also, he wanted total creative control and twenty percent of “first-dollar gross.”
He also asked Universal not to release any of its other new movies three weeks before or three weeks after his film.
Last but not least, Chris Nolan made sure that his new film wouldn’t come out immediately on streaming services. So, he requested a minimum of a 100-day theatrical window.
If you want to compare, Marvel Studios’ latest release Shang-Chi is only available for 45 days in cinema halls.
As per the confirmed reports, two other competing studios wanting to partner with Nolan were Apple and Sony. Since Universal accepted all of his requests and conditions, the filmmaker decided to go with the latter.
What’s the new Nolan movie about?
As far as the new film of Christopher Nolan is concerned, it’s based on the life of Robert J. Oppenheimer. After his 2017 blockbuster Dunkirk, it will be his second historical venture.
The movie will follow the story set in the era of World War II. Although the plot details are still under wraps, the project will focus on Oppenheimer’s life. He was a key individual in the Manhattan Project. He was asked to develop the first-ever nuclear weapons.
As for the casting, only actor Cillian Murphy is confirmed for the film, and he will have a significant part in the story.
The film will be made on a budget of around $100 million.
