The Dragon Ball franchise officially announced a new Dragon Ball Super movie, but when will its production begin?
All eyes are now on the new Dragon Ball Super movie after details about it first leaked over the weekend. As its coming has been officially confirmed on the recent Goku Day, here is everything that you need to know.
New movie’s production details and more
According to Comicbook, news about the development of the new Dragon Ball movie has been making rounds since 2019.
However, Toei Animation is, reportedly, hard at work for the new film installment earlier than that.
The announcement revealed the studio had started the second movie’s production even before Dragon Ball Super: Broly began. Its planning stages kicked off as early as 2018.
“Planning for the new film project was kicked off in 2018, before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly,” it was announced. “The goal [was to tell] a large-scale story that would build on the enthusiastic response for the previous theatrical series and the current global fervor for Broly.”
The original series creator Akira Toriyama will direct and write the new Dragon Ball Super movie, making fans more excited.
He already had an idea in mind on what to do with the sequel even before Broly. So, it may mean that the second movie will have an important role to play in the canon.

The movie announcement
The new Dragon Ball Super movie announcement came during Goku Day on Saturday, May 9.
Toei Animation revealed the upcoming film would be part of the Dragon Ball Super timeline. So, it would also be included in the Dragon Ball Z sequel series that started in 2015.
This just means that it will not be a direct sequel to the 2018 Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The franchise’s last theatrical release turned out a box-office hit, breaking a lot of records.
It also revealed that Toriyama would be working closely with the movie’s production team, per Polygon. He would basically work on everything.
He would be part of the “magnificent story composition, the character design, and the lines of the script.”
Toei Animation called the upcoming film a “Dragon Ball movie unlike any other in its history.”
However, the company is yet to announce the movie’s plot, as Toriyama wants to put a little mystery in it.
“I shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character,” he said. “We’ll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie.”
Whatever the case may be, fans are now excited to see the new Dragon Ball Super movie.
