According to Reuters, PM Jacinda Ardern declared a climate emergency amid praises from lawmakers in the parliament on Wednesday.
With this, the prime minister also promised that the public sector would become carbon neutral by 2025.
“This declaration is an acknowledgment of the next generation. An acknowledgment of the burden that they will carry if we do not get this right and do not take action now,” Ardern said in her parliament speech.
Speaking over the necessity of this huge step, PM Ardern said that the declaration is based on the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It stated that it’s important to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2025. And that’s required to avoid a 1.5 degree Celsius rise in Global Warming.
Speaking of the parliamentary debate before the declaration, it ran for about an hour. And after that, the majority of lawmakers voted in favor of a climate emergency. However, the opposition, National Party, voted against it. It said that the decision is nothing more than “virtue signaling.”
Jacinda Ardern is set to transform the nation with her strong and brave decisions in a second term. About a month ago, she returned to power courtesy of a historic victory in general elections. Her center-left Labour party won with a record margin.
In the past, the prime minister has termed climate emergency as a “nuclear-free moment of our generation.” And her willingness to do great work in this aspect clearly seems visible by her government’s acting on what it promises.
In her previous term, she passed the revolutionary Zero Carbon Bill in 2019. And the objective of it is to reach zero net emissions by 2050. Only farming, gas exploration, and banned new offshore oil are exempted from this bill.
And now, the current government’s promise to make itself carbon neutral by 2025 surely will inspire its citizens to support the cause. And considering the nation’s impressive action against the pandemic also, it’s certain that it will achieve this goal.
But the greater victory will be when the majority of nations get some motivation from New Zealand. That is, they should also embrace crucial actions like climate emergency.
