In yet another historic move, New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern is set to declare a nationwide climate emergency. It will happen next week.
According to Reuters, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has clearly mentioned her concern for the environment. And her government is going to declare a climate emergency in the country.
Next Wednesday, the government will put a motion to declare the emergency.
“We’ve always considered climate change to be a huge threat to our region, and it is something we must take immediate action on,” said the PM.
Jacinda Ardern and her strong stand on the environment
The prime minister admitted that in the last term, her government couldn’t impose the climate emergency. But now they will do it soon, to protect the environment in the nation.
“Unfortunately, we were unable to progress a motion around a climate emergency in parliament in the last term, but now we’re able to.”
Jacinda Ardern returned to power last month as she created history in general elections. Her Labour party won with a huge majority and higher vote margins. And her government also happens to be the most diverse ever! It includes ministers from all gender identities like Lesbian, Gay, and LGBTQ+.
New Zealand setting examples in front of the world
A big reason for the Labour party’s grand victory in last month’s election was how it faced the pandemic. PM Ardern’s government handled COVID-19 in a well-planned manner. And thus, the voters rewarded them with huge support. They felt that her tackling of the situation was decisive.
In this way, New Zealand also set benchmarks for other nations in the world. Because the rest of the countries are still struggling to deal with increasing Coronavirus cases, they are not yet able to stop its spread among the people, and the governments are helpless.
On the other hand, New Zealand did well in minimizing the cases and ending the chain of the virus in many areas.
On the part of the environment and saving the planet, too, the country is leading others.
Last year, the government of PM Jacinda Ardern introduced the Zero Carbon bill to reduce emissions in the coming years as soon as possible. And now, the decision to impose a climate emergency is a sign of how serious New Zealand is when it comes to the actions above talks.
The government is actually working towards the crucial goals, instead of just misleading the people on deviating topics. It’s what other administrations across the globe constantly do.
