Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE is expected to roll out a new smartphone model with a camera under the screen.
If successful, ZTE will be the first smartphone manufacturer to bring this unique configuration to the market. The design itself is no longer new, and some smartphone developers have tested this particular design. However, not one manufacturer has ever shipped a smartphone that has that feature.
Axon 20 5G
The phone is the ZTE Axon 20 5G, and it is expected to hit the Chinese market in September. The tech company has noted that several other smartphone developers are also working with the design. However, the company plans to be the first to ever bring a working smartphone with that design into the market.
Under-display cameras have been tested already by several major smartphone developers. Xiaomi and Oppo have teased prototypes with this design in the past. However, glass and display technology are still relatively underpowered to support such a feature.
Currently, most smartphones have notches on which the cameras are installed. Some models have pop-up selfie cameras. However, under-display cameras are still relatively new.

With an under-screen camera configuration, the smartphone will have a much larger screen real-estate. It will also get rid of the notches that hold the camera in place. This is the first time a true full display smartphone will ever hit the market.
Producing a full under-display camera configuration is a technological feat for ZTE. This comes as no surprise as the company has been a leader in smartphone development for years. The company is also one of the first to mass-produce smartphones with 5G capabilities.
Not much is known about the upcoming from ZTE. The company has yet to confirm how much the phone will cost, or will it be available outside of China.
What to expect
The official specs of the Axon 20 5G are still unconfirmed. However, there are a couple of leaks from the Chinese regulator TENAA that have hinted about it.
One of the leaks revealed that the phone would have a 32-megapixel front-facing camera. On the rear, it will feature a four-camera configuration. This configuration includes one 64-megapixel sensor, one 8-megapixel sensor, and two two-megapixel sensors.
Another leak suggests that the phone will feature a 6.92-inch OLED screen. The phone also supports up to 12GB of memory.
As usual, these rumors and leaks should be taken with a grain of salt. No one knows for sure what the specs of the phone are until ZTE confirms it.
