Game developers across the United States and the United Kingdom are planning to enter the world of blockchain to offer NFT games.
The use of Non-Fungible Tokens exploded earlier this year. As it continues to become increasingly popular, many gaming companies now work to get their share in the new market through NFT games.
But, not all developers are planning to get on board today. Some are still seemingly looking around to observe and see its potential.
Xbox chief Phil Spencer recently shared some of his thoughts about blockchain technology, specifically non-fungible token-based games. Games Radar released a report about the engagement, detailing what the Microsoft executive had to say.
Xbox chief on NFT games
Speaking to Axios, the head of the Xbox brand believes that there is “a lot of speculation and experimentation” surrounding NFT. He added, however, that some of those “feels more exploitive” than it is about entertainment.
“Proponents” reportedly explained that NFT games provide players the chance to “generate value” for their in-game items. These platforms also allow them to take such items from title to title, using blockchain technology.
Despite the negative tone, Spencer does not draw a firm line against all NFT-based creatives. It does not “necessitate that every NFT game is exploitive,” he said, though, the public is “kind of in that journey” of figuring it all out.
In the end, nevertheless, the Xbox chief stressed that it is something to take action on as no one would want that kind of content.
Developers’ take and plans
Tech Times reported that a recent study surveyed nearly 200 U.S. and U.K.-based video game developers about NFT games. 58 percent of the respondents said that they are already planning to utilise blockchain technology for their products.
Alongside the result, 47 percent of the devs revealed that they have already integrated non-fungible tokens in their respective designs.
Meanwhile, 61 percent of the surveyed developers cited “more interesting gameplay” and “innovation” as the reason behind their decisions.
NFT-based games surge
To date, there are already tons of NFT-based games available for everyone to play. Among all, though, Axie Infinity, Splinterlands, and Alien Worlds, are at the top of the list, according to The Portugal News.
Alien Worlds appear to be on top of all, owing to its almost 760,000 active monthly players. Axie Infinity and Splinterlands come in second and third with their respective 602,000 and 600,000 monthly users.
Other popular NFT games include Arc8 and MOBOX: NFT Farmer. The titles reportedly have over 380,000 and 187,500 active monthly players, respectively.
