Nintendo is officially announcing the rollout of 2020’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament on May 15, 2020 and it comes with a specific theme of electricity, limiting access to characters with electric-based skills.
Originally revealed in a tweet via the game’s official Japanese Twitter page, the tournament will be running for 3 days.

An Obscure, Yet Telling Tweet
Non-Japanese audiences who are oblivious to the tweet’s actual contents will actually find the theme to the post. Featuring Dragon Quest XI’s Hero, Pokemon’s Pikachu, Earthbound’s Ness, Fire Emblem’s Robin, and Metroid’s Zero Suit Samus, the image depiction is quite telling.
Pikachu, for one, being more obvious considering its popular affinity in electricity in the Pokemon franchise. Although others are less obvious, including the ones not shown in the image, they also exhibit an energy-based motif.
For instance, Princess Zelda has a lightning kick while Dark Pit has an Electroshock as his special.
Pichu, like Pikachu, is likely going to be a popular choice in the tournament, considering the two’s likeness and fierceness. As is the identical case between Lucas and Ness.
Not Too Limited
To the uninitiated, the idea of restricting access to players with electric-type moves might be too constricting. But veterans know that there are many in the roster who fit the bill, considering also SSBU’s vast selection of playable characters.
As of posting, however, there is no reference that lists which characters make it into the game and which do not. Unless you have really played the game extensively, which figures make the cut or not could be oblivious. But, then again, a tournament as serious as SSBU was never meant for those unfamiliar to the game, to begin with.
Being a Japan-exclusive event, no one knows why Nintendo had chosen the theme for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s 2020 Tournament. A simple tweet, in Japanese texts no less, does not offer much when it comes to details. Even if the images hint at what could be a conspicuous message.
However, if there is one to surmise, it is likely the majority of the character’s commonality for having electric-type attacks at their disposal. Either that or this year’s motif is symbolic at giving participant’s an exhilarating experience amidst an ongoing crisis.
