HMD Global has announced two new models in its Nokia lineup. The Nokia 2.4 and Nokia 3.4 are here to give budget buyers more options.
Going by Nokia’s naming scheme, the Nokia 3.4 is the better device. But, that does not mean that the Nokia 2.4 is not worth getting. There are still some reasons why the cheaper option is the one to get.
The current lineup of Nokia devices is running close to vanilla Android software. This gives the devices a smooth running experience.
Unfortunately, the two new devices are not running on Android Go. It would have been better as Go software allows budget devices to run apps faster.
Nokia 3.4 is the better device
As mentioned earlier, Nokia 3.4 is clearly the best choice between the two. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460. The new processor gives smartphones more CPU cores to ensure speedy processing.
The Snapdragon 460 could easily run the usual social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram without any hiccups.
However, multitasking might be challenging as it only has 3GB to 4GB of memory. There are two storage options as well. The base model comes in at 32GB and the next variant has 64GB of storage.
The storage option might seem low by today’s standards. But bear in mind that the Nokia 3.4 has an expandable microSD card slot.
Besides the snappy processor, this device is running a triple camera setup. It is common for budget devices to run multiple cameras this time though so it is not a surprise.
The main shooter is a 13-megapixel wide sensor. It is complemented by a 5-megapixel ultrawide and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The 8-megapixel front camera takes care of selfies.
The name might be 3.4, but the screen size is double its name. This device is rocking a 6.39-inch HD+ LCD display with a hole punch cut out for the camera.
Battery life is expected to be average. It only has a 4,000mAh battery. But, Nokia might have something up its sleeve to increase the screen on time. There is a bonus 10W fast charging capability so topping it up in an hour is no problem.
Other features include a dedicated Google Assistant button and a fingerprint scanner at the back. All of these features are available for only US$179.
A smaller device with a lot of features
The Nokia 2.4 is a little bit smaller than the 3.4 when it comes to screen size. This device has a 6.5-inch HD+ display with a notch for the selfie camera.
One way for HMD Global to cut costs is to opt for a different processor manufacturer. The 2.4 is running an Helio P22 chipset. It might be slower than the Snapdragon 460 but it works really well for day-to-day usage.
There are two variants to the 2.4 as well. One with 2GB of memory with 32GB of storage while the other one has 3GB of RAM and 64GB storage. It also has a microSD card slot.
The backside houses a dual-camera setup with a 13-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Users may take selfies via its 5-megapixel front camera.
HMD Global did well in creating a basic device. However, the MicroUSB connection is a step back to several years ago.
The Nokia 2.4 is a contender at this price point. For only $139, it has a lot to offer for frugal buyers. It might be cheap, but it does not skimp out on the essentials.
