The OnePlus 8T is right around the corner. Now, the OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, has confirmed some details of the upcoming smartphone.
Lau stated in his interview with TechRadar, that OnePlus has fitted a 120Hz screen on the OnePlus 8T. There will be no size changes between the new device and its predecessor.
“The OnePlus 8T comes with a 6.55-inch 120Hz fluid display, which is the same size as OnePlus 8,” Lau said.
OnePlus claims that the smartphone will have a “buttery smooth display experience” with an improved entertainment experience.
Smoother screen for an improved user experience
OnePlus opted for a 90Hz screen on the OnePlus 8 which is more than enough for regular use. Some apps are still capped at 60fps thus there is no need to push for a higher refresh rate.
However, Lau explained the rationale behind the refresh rate buff.
“The screen is the most highly-used component on a phone. Display experience contributes significantly to the overall fast and smooth experience,” mentioned Lau.
“With that in mind, OnePlus introduced a QHD+ 90Hz AMOLED screen on OnePlus 7 Pro, the first in the industry, which was very well received. Now, we’ve pushed the refresh rate to 120Hz for an even smoother display experience for our premium-tier OnePlus 8T,” he added.
According to the CEO, the evolving technology allows the company to bring high refresh screens to more products.
They want to give the “best-in-class display technology” to a wider range of audiences.
Better screen, smaller bezels
According to Lau, OnePlus engineers have improved the device’s display. It now has better colors, brightness, and smoothness in comparison to the regular OnePlus 8.
DisplayMate awarded the 8T an A+ rating due to the massive display tweaks.
Lau spoke about the changes they made in terms of the display. The new 2.5D flexible glass is responsible for the brighter screen and accurate colors. The new display can go up to 1,000 nits which are way above the competition.
“Compared to regular panels, the 2.5D flexible screen offers an improved light permeability and can reach a maximum brightness of 1,100 nits,” Lau stated.
The smartphone will have a 91.9% screen-to-body ratio. It will have slimmer bezels compared to other OnePlus smartphones including the recently released OnePlus Nord.
During the interview, the CEO compared the new device to the OnePlus 8 Pro. This implies the possibility of the OnePlus 8T launching alone. Rumors of the OnePlus 8T Pro have surfaced but a Pro unit might be arriving at a later date.
Unconfirmed OnePlus 8T specs
According to GSM Arena, the OnePlus 8T will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. There will be two variants available. One with 8GB of memory and 128GB of storage. The other one will have 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
There will be no micro SD card expansion slot. But, it will sport a quad-camera module at the back.
The main shooter is a 48-megapixel wide-angle sensor. It comes alongside the 16-megapixel ultrawide, 5-megapixel macro, and a 2-megapixel depth-sensing camera. There will be a single 32-megapixel selfie camera.
It will have a 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast charging capabilities. Other features include an under-display fingerprint sensor, HDR10+ support.
Pricing and availability
OnePlus will launch the device on October 14. Leaks suggest that all variants will be more expensive than its predecessor.
The 8GB/128GB variant will sell for around US$930. The higher variant will be priced at around $1,050.
