OnePlus is taking the Fortnite mobile gaming to a higher level as it partners with Epic Games to produce a 90 FPS smartphone experience.
OnePlus has just released its official announcement declaring its OnePlus 8 Series as the first-ever Android smartphone to be able to run Fortnite with a smooth frequency rate of 90 frames per second (FPS).
What makes this announcement so groundbreaking is because of the fact the most Android smartphones, if not all, can only run Epic Games‘ battle royale classic at a maximum rate of 60 FPS.
OnePlus 8 series heightens mobile gaming standard
The Verge noted that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 can also only run Fortnite at the same frame rate. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch is only capable of 30 FPS max.
The only device that can run games such as Fortnite so smoothly is Apple’s iPad Pro which has a maximum frame rate of 120 FPS. Even Apple’s latest flagships—iPhone XR, XS Max, and XS—only have the 60 FPS option.
According to its press release:
This partnership, rooted in technological innovation, was driven by both Epic Games and OnePlus’ desire to take Fortnite to a higher level on Android. Together, we have created the best Fortnite experience ever on a smartphone. The OnePlus 8 Series delivers a smooth, high frame rate gameplay experience – that even current-generation game consoles can’t match.
The whole 90 FPS Fortnite project reportedly took eight months of development. The Chinese tech giant said that this partnership is in line with the company’s commitment to bring the “best mobile gaming experiences” to its OnePlus users.
Aside from ramping up the FPS capacity of the OnePlus 8 series, they’ve also done the same for the OnePlus 7 series users but at a 60 FPS capacity only.

How did OnePlus make this possible?
Per Gamespot‘s review, the OnePlus 8 is packed with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset which has the power to run a rate of 90 FPS on mobile games. Also, it was paired with a 90Hz refresh rate display panel.
Of course, Epic Games did the “necessary optimization” to enable OnePlus to run the game dev’s Unreal Engine at a 90 FPS rate.
Meanwhile, one important detail worth noting is that y running Fortnite at a maximum 90 FPS rate the overall graphics settings, according to the media outlet, will default to “Low.” Nevertheless, the resolution scale remains 100% the same.
OnePlus does take pride in this great milestone, as OnePlus chief marketing officer Kyle Kiang tells the Gamespot:
“One of the reasons we were successful in the early days was that our approach was a bit different, making one product at a time, very focused on the quality of the user experience for people that basically wanted a pure Android experience; so no bloatware.”
There’s also a new process in the works, and right now, it is just available in India. The built-in Game Space app will allow easy installation with just one tap.
