Oppo could be in the works for an exclusive flagship processor in collaboration with Qualcomm.
A leakster called Digital Chat Station on Twitter claimed that Oppo is developing a smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 as its processor.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 870
The chipset name comes as a shocker to the technology community because it does not follow Qualcomm’s nomenclature.
Qualcomm has been releasing flagship chips that have the number five in the end; for example, Snapdragon 855, Snapdragon 865, and so on. Hence, the number 870 seems a bit odd.
There are also rumors for the launch of Qualcomm’s latest chip, which will go by the name Snapdragon 875 in December. The expected date of the announcement event for the Snapdragon 875 is December 1.
However, any news about the Snapdragon 870 is yet to be confirmed by officials at Qualcomm.
The Snapdragon 875 should debut with flagships from Xiaomi and Samsung at first but would later be the basis for flagship smartphones in 2021.
On the other hand, Snapdragon 870 would supposedly be exclusive to Oppo, claims a report by Giz China.
Oppo had also hinted at a “lite” version of Snapdragon 875 in August, according to a report by Hindustan Times.

Demand for flagship chips
According to a report by GSM Arena, the demand for flagship chips in the world is falling. It might be due to the availability of mid-tier chips, like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G.
Hence, it would make sense for Qualcomm to diversify its premium offering by adding a new line of chips, even in the premium segment. It could potentially mean more demand for such a “fence hitting” flagship chips.
Specifications
Snapdragon 870 would most probably be a “lite” version of the Snapdragon 875. The new chipset would lie somewhere between the Snapdragon 865 and the Snapdragon 875 in terms of performance.
Allegedly, it would reach up to 3.2 GHz speed for its CPU, assuming it would be one powerful core rather than multiple units.
Oppo PERM00 spotted
In somewhat related news, Oppo’s smartphone with the model number PERM00 has been spotted in the database of TENAA.
The listing reveals that the smartphone has 5G capabilities and is powered by a 2GHz octa-core processor.
It has a 6.5-inch FHD+ display and a 16MP camera in the front. Also, a 4,910 mAh battery is fitted that would power the phone.
It also has a quad-camera setup and a fingerprint sensor on the back since there is no OLED panel to support an in-display fingerprint sensor.
