Outlander returns for season 6 with major stars such as ‎Caitriona Balfe‎. However, the release date is still uncertain amid the global pandemic.

Starz has long confirmed Outlander season 6 in 2018. The network has ordered and approved the renewal of the series’ fifth and sixth installments.

With the latest season’s appalling conclusion, fans are now curious about what’s in store for the forthcoming Outlander season 6.

Season 5 recap

Outlander season 5 was packed with a lot of twists and turns that even the avid fans could not have possibly predicted. It featured the near-death experiences of Roger and Jamie, as well as a desperately sad farewell to Murtagh.

In this season, Brianna also dealt with her rapist Stephen Bonnet. She realized Stephen’s death sentence by shooting him. Furthermore, Roger, Brianna, and Jemmy found themselves in 18th century America instead of returning to the future. They then ascertained that the “home” they were referring to was their family in Fraser’s Ridge.

However, the season’s finale revealed the biggest surprise of the season. It showcased Brownsville resident Lionel Brown and his men brutally gang-raping Claire.

Season 6 spoilers

Executive producer Matthew Roberts insisted that season six will continue to cover the sixth book of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. However, the showrunner added that it is still expected for the show to make significant book-to-TV changes.

Reportedly, season 6 will bring fans closer to the Revolutionary War. In this period, Jamie and Claire will encounter a new group of settlers in and around Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie’s life will clearly be put in danger in this installment.

The character ominously told his wife, Claire in season 5’s finale:

“When the day shall come that we do part, if my last words are not, ‘I love you’, you know it’s because I did not have time.”

Above all, the series writers are expected to introduce an afresh romance between Jocasta and his butler Ulysses.

Who will return

Fans will be pleased to know most of the show’s major stars will be coming back again for season six. These are the following stars who will reprise their roles:

  • Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall Fraser
  • Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser
  • Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield
  • Sophie Skelton as Brianna Randall
  • Colin McFarlane as Ulysses
  • Doyle Kennedy as Jocasta

However, Duncan Lacroix will no longer return. The pre-Revolutionary War battle killed his character Murtagh. Talking about his exit, he told Elle:

“Usually I’m not that emotional, but for the first time I kind of separated myself from Murtagh and felt really, really bad for him.”

Release date

If all things go according to the showrunner’s plan, the show could be released at some point in 2021. However, it seems unlikely if the COVID-19 outbreak is not resolved since this pandemic has shut down the TV production worldwide.
