‘Ozark’ season 4: Deceitful Marty Byrde planned Helen’s death, theory suggests

Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) is apparently in a good place with Omar Navarro and the Mexican cartel in Ozark season 4. A fan theory suggests that the Byrdes cut a deal with the cartel that also ended with the death of Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer).

The Byrdes behaved suspiciously when they boarded that plane for Mexico in the final moments of Ozark last season. Special Agent Maya Miller (Jessica Frances Duke) cautioned that they could be in for a trap, but Marty responded with a stoic reaction.

A fan posted on Reddit that he believes Marty’s reaction is based on the fact that he knew he and his wife, Wendy, are safe. Allegedly, Miller’s warning didn’t ruffle his feathers because he was actually on to something.

“I personally think Nelson, Marty, and Navarro were in on something for a while there at the end of season 3,” the fan said, adding that Helen also had a deal with the FBI. However, Marty apparently felt that he was in a better position to negotiate with Agent Miller with Helen gone.

Jason Bateman knows the ending

This theory brings another layer to the kind of deception Marty is capable of and Bateman hinted that the Ozark season 4 finale would not be a disappointment.

“I do know where everything is going to end,” Bateman said in an interview with IndieWire. “The specifics leading up to it, I didn’t really grind [Mundy] on. But I was interested in the big question he has the opportunity to answer: Are they going to get away with it, or are they going to pay a bill?”

The final season will have 14 episodes and will be released in two parts on Netflix. The cast and crew will begin production in November but Bateman will likely forgo the tradition of directing the first two episodes.

“The producer side of me made me think it’s just not responsible to have one of the actors direct the first two, given that we’re still going to be getting our perimeter safe,” Bateman explained. “If one of the actors gets sick, we all have to go home for weeks. If one of the crew members gets sick — while I’m making sure their salary is protected while they’re in quarantine — we can hire a replacement.”

Concerns on the set

Bateman said that he’s very concerned about resuming work on Ozark season 4 because of the real threats of COVID-19. They are making sure, however, to get some points and guidance from other productions that are already filming.

Everyone working on Ozark season 4 will get tested every week and Bateman is certain that someone is bound to be positive one way or another. The actor, producer and director said that they are preparing for the worst. They are also expecting the best, with 60 to 70 people on the set every day.
