Paul Bettany understands why the Marvel Cinematic Universe practices secrecy.
For years, Marvel Studios has been home to Paul Bettany. These years also allowed him to understand why Marvel wants to keep secrets despite sounding so frustrating.
Bettany became part of this secrecy by voicing J.A.R.V.I.S, in 2008 Iron Man. He initially served as Tony Stark’s A.I. assistant before playing the role of Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
He landed the spotlight through the series about Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Although he asked Wanda to kill him in Avengers: Infinity War, he got killed again by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.
Thus, his reappearance in WandaVision gave birth to questions to fans since the series took place three weeks after the Endgame.
Marvel does not lack information. Instead, the company wants to maintain the secrecy it has been practicing for years.
Why Paul Bettany agrees to MCU secrecy
In a new interview with ACE Universe (via Comicbook), Bettany talked about Marvel’s “frustrating” yet understandable secrecy.
Per the actor, keeping secrets may be a frustrating process, but he believes in it.
“I come from a family – my dad was an actor, my mom was a singer – and my mom and dad always had this thing, you never show people the costumes before the curtain goes up, you know? Don’t show people how the magic trick is done,” he said.
He added that he loves that secrecy about Marvel. He noted that the franchise keeps the secrets so it can give excitement to fans.
Bettany’s comments on secrecy reflected on WandaVision’s first few episodes. He also added more hype by saying that he would be working with an actor he always wanted to work with.
While fans want more from him, the actor does not know if he will ever return as Vision again.
His contract, reportedly, got expired already, diminishing fans’ hopes even more.
“And all that I do know is, as far as this sort of traunch of press goes, it’s for an Emmy push, which is for a limited series. So it doesn’t look like that happening again,” he told The Playlist.
According to Bettany, it would be difficult to introduce White Vision in MCU’s current phase. Before his original death, his counterpart, White Vision, vanished.
For now, he waits until Marvel Studios contact him again for another project.
