Phantasy Star Online 2 introduced a brand new expansion that will overhaul the game. The update called New Genesis seems to imply it will improve the title.
Phantasy Star Online 2 is one of the best games out there. Even then, its outdated graphics don’t hold water in today’s modern MMO. These are about to change with the upcoming New Genesis patch for the game.
New Genesis will overhaul PSO2’s dated graphics
New Genesis debuted at the recent Xbox Games Showcase with a new trailer. The trailer seems to imply a lot of things, including a very hectic melee combat. What’s remarkable about it, however, is the overhaul in the graphics department.
PSO2 came out in Japan in 2012, with graphics ahead of its time. Eight years later, the game came out to the West and around the world. Even then, the new release didn’t mean an updated graphics.
Fans of the game had to deal with its severely limited graphics. The menus are also clunky, tiresome, and hard to navigate. Sega is looking to change all these with New Genesis.
The trailer shows a much more detailed, crisp, and modern look to the game. The title shows a much more expansive world, with graphics similar to Final Fantasy XV. Everything has a better feel to them, with less clunky movement.
Even then, details are scarce for the game so far. Calling it an expansion, DLC or patch is hard, but it seems it is a patch. The YouTube description makes the details more confusing.
PSO2 vague about what New Genesis is
In the Phantasy Star Online 2 official channels, the trailer video description is vague. The Twitter account calls it a “brand new title” in the series. The YouTube channel says differently.
“[New Genesis] is the latest entry in the series, updating PSO2’s game system and graphics engine,” says the description. “We’re planning to release this update on a global scale, including Japan and North America.”
This detail is confusing, as it doesn’t clear if it’s a patch or a full remaster. It will work as a patch, but as a remaster, a variety of questions remain. Issues such as progress, inventory, and missions will be problematic.
Even then, New Genesis is an exciting prospect for fans of the game. It’s also a great way to get more players, especially those turned off by its dated graphics.
New players would surely enjoy the upcoming Phantasy Star Online 2 patch. More information should be available in the weeks to come. The patch will come out 2021.
