Phantasy Star Online 2 will have a collaboration with Platinum Games’ Nier: Automata. The collab will include three skin packs with skins for 2B, A2, and 9S. These packs will sell at a premium, setting players back $35 per pack.
The three skin packs for the Nier skins will include a set for each of the three main characters in the game. The skins are also super high-detailed and look straight out of the original game.
The first skin will be a 2B costume pack, which looks downright awesome. The pack itself will include her dress, a Resistance sticker, and her entire hair set. The hair set divides into three parts, including a headband, hair, and blindfold/googles.
Players will also get the Virtuous Contract and Beastlord weapon camo. The set will add an evolution device that will convert player mag into Pod 042. The movesets look good, and the quality of the design is hard to deny.
The 9S pack will include almost the same set, from clothes to hair and blindfold. Instead of Pod 042, players will get Pod 153 for their mag, while getting the Type-3 weapon camo. What’s weird, however, is the 9S pack having Emile’s Head as a bonus.
The A2 set looks nice too, which will include an A2 Replica base wear and a 9S replica F. Players will also get Type-3 Fists and Sword, together with a Machine Lifeform Head.
Phantasy Star Online 2 is infamous for its gacha system in Japan. Even then, this is much an accepted reality in free-to-play games in Asia.
Genshin Impact, for example, is raking tons of money from the U.S. and Asia through its gacha system.
The Nier collab skins are part of the gacha-style AC scratch tickets in Japan.
Everything is about chance, so getting the set can cost more or less than the current asking price. For players who want all three, they should be ready to shell out $35.
It’s unknown why PSO2 did not add the skins on their gacha for their Western audience. The premium set would likely get many players trying their luck for it.
Even then, this might signal a change in the monetization scheme for the game’s Western audience.
The Nier: Automata collab packs will stay from October 14 to November 11. Phantasy Star Online 2 players would likely need to prepare their wallets soon. These skins will be hot, so anyone who wants them needs to shell out.
