Pokemon Sword and Shield is now the fifth-best selling Nintendo Switch game. The title clinched the spot with 18.22 million copies besting Super Mario Odyssey.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remained on top with 26.74 million sales. However, Pokemon Sword and Shield is a head-turner. Both games saw a huge jump in sales during the past months.
Pokemon Sword and Shield expansion pass boosts sales
Both Pokemon titles came out in 2019 amassing millions of sales immediately. But, the main driver of its sales lately is the current Pokemon expansion pass.
The current expansion pass introduces two new content for players. It contains The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.
This downloadable content further expands the map allowing players to meet new people and explore new places.
The Isle of Armor introduces a dojo where players can do Pokemon battles. Meanwhile, The Crown Tundra takes players into a new adventure.
The expansion takes players to a frozen land home to legendary Pokemons.
These expansion passes are sold separately. But for dedicated Pokemon fans, having both is a no-brainer.
Third best Pokemon games ever
These games are currently the third best-selling Pokemon games ever. The first spot is taken by Pokemon Red, Blue, and Green with 31.38 million sales. Considering the current trend, it might take a while before a new Pokemon game takes this spot.
Pokemon Gold and Silver takes the second spot with 23.10 million sales. This is more achievable by the current Pokemon games.
However, Nintendo and Gamefreak might need an additional set of expansion passes to boost its sales further.
The Pokemon Sword and Shield is the first mainline Nintendo Switch Pokemon game. That being said, there are no signs that the sales growth is stopping soon. Unless a new title comes out.
