Prince Harry had a wish he wanted to fulfill for his mother, Princess Diana, after learning of her passing, but dad, Prince Charles, did not allow him to do so.
Prince Harry and Prince William were only 12 and 15 when their mom died in a tragic car crash in 1997. Although the world mourned the unexpected death of the People’s Princess, no one had grieved her loss more than her two sons.
A desperate move to protect Prince Harry, Prince William
Princess Diana’s car accident happened in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997. At the time, Prince Harry and Prince William were with their father for a holiday at Balmoral.
A call changed their lives when somebody told Prince Charles of the death of his former wife. He then told his mom, Queen Elizabeth II, about the bad news.
They then thought of a way to shield the two young princes from the “worst of the tragedy,” Mirror Online noted.
Upon learning his mom’s death, the Duke of Sussex wanted to fulfill “one final wish” for his mother. All he wanted was to travel to Paris with his dad to collect the Princess of Wales’ body.
In a desperate move to protect his son, Prince Charles refused his request. Instead, he traveled alone to bring Princess Diana’s body back to Britain.
“The Queen and Prince Charles’ view was that the boys were their main priority,” Princess Diana’s friend and journalist Richard Kay said.

A rift between Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth II
Amid the heir to the throne’s plan to bring in Princess Diana’s body himself, it caused a huge rift with his mother.
“Charles took the decision that he was going to Paris to bring back Diana’s body,” Kay added. “This was a surprising and brave move.”
As an ex-husband, Kay explained he had no right to be with the princess, other than being the father of their kids.
“Charles wanted to take the royal flight to Paris, but the Queen wouldn’t allow it,” Kay continued. “Charles fought harder for Diana than he had ever fought for her in her lifetime.”
Prince Charles did not heed Her Majesty’s order, which eventually convinced her to let him fly to Paris and bring back Princess Diana’s body.
Princess Diana’s last phone call
Before Princess Diana’s death, she had a previous phone call with Prince Harry and Prince William, and it caused a major regret for the royal brothers.
In the 2017 documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, the siblings revealed the impact of their mother’s death.
Here, they revealed the regrets they had about the last phone call they had with Princess D, Express noted.
Prince Harry revealed it was something he would regret for the rest of his life. Prince William, alternatively, admitted he rushed off of the call.
