Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have recently spoken in a Time 100 video message where they appealed to Americans to use their right to vote.
Though it may be okay for Meghan Markle to urge her fellow Americans, Prince Harry had, reportedly, “crossed the line.”
Reject hate speech and vote
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s pre-recorded video were of them sat on a wood bench in the middle of a massive green lawn.
Prince Harry told the viewers, “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity.”
“This election, I’m not going to be able to vote here in the US. But many of you may not know that I haven’t been able to vote in the UK my entire life,” he added.
Meanwhile, the former “Suits” actress urged people to participate in voting in this “most important election of our lifetime.”
She said, “When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter because you do, and you deserve to be heard.”
Prince Harry, Meghan Markle swayed voters
British royal family members are neutral when it comes to politics.
But the 36-year-old Prince is still, after all, a full-blooded royal.
Though they did not endorse a candidate, their comments seemed to have been interpreted by some as urging people to vote for Joe Biden instead of Trump.
Even Piers Morgan, one of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s outspoken critics, said that their video was unacceptable. He even called for Queen Elizabeth II to remove them from their royal titles altogether.
Piers tweeted, “The brazen disregard for royal neutrality rules to dump on Trump leaves the Queen with no option but to strip them of ALL their royal titles.”
“He’s still a royal, they both are … If they drop the titles, they can say what they like. But the titles bring in their $$$$$$,” he concluded.
On Monday, Trump addressed the couple’s video at a press conference.
One reporter told him, “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chimed in on the US election and essentially encouraged people to vote for Joe Biden. I wanted to get your reaction to that.”
Trump responded, “I am not a fan of hers. I wish a lot of luck to Harry because he’s going to need it.”
Buckingham Palace shunned Prince Harry
Buckingham Palace has distanced itself from the Duke of Sussex’s political comments.
A spokesperson said, “We would not comment. The Duke is not a working member of the royal family, and any comments he makes are in a personal capacity.”
Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty Magazine, explained that despite Prince Harry remaining sixth in line to the throne, he shouldn’t have been involved in the elections or political matters.
He said, “You can understand Meghan getting involved as an American citizen, although she is now a member of the British royal family.”
“But I think people will struggle a lot more with Prince Harry because as a prince of the blood, it’s not seen as the done thing to talk about politics, be it British or American.”
Joe added, “He may be thousands of miles away, but yet he is still a member of the royal family, the Queen’s grandson, and it’s something he wouldn’t do were he still in the UK.”
