Meghan Markle and Prince Harry retained their HRH status after exit.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shocked the world when they announced their decision to step down as senior royals. Despite all the controversies, Queen Elizabeth publicly supported the couple’s desire to live a life outside the British Monarchy.
On March 31, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex formally exited their royal posts. They had to relinquish some of their royal titles, including even the usage of the word “royal.”
But, they retained their HRH style with the monarch’s blessing. The couple cannot use it, though, in a formal setting.
Cheat Sheet recently reported that the couple might soon relinquish all of their remaining royal titles, including the HRH style. The same publication also claimed that rumors have continued to develop that Queen Elizabeth will likely take it all back.
Queen Elizabeth’s authority to bestow and withdraw titles
As the head of the British Monarchy, Queen Elizabeth has all the authority to strip British Royals of their titles. Constitutional expert Iain MacMarthanne explained that she could take away what she has given, Daily Express reported.
But, while she has the authority to withdraw and strip Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s titles, it remains unclear if she will. Nevertheless, speculations about the matter have remained rampant.

🏎💨💨💨 • This morning, The Duke of Sussex raced up to Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix to open the The Silverstone Experience, a brand-new immersive museum that tells the story of the past, present and future of British motor racing. Joined by six-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton MBE, The Duke of Sussex and Lewis toured @thesilverstoneexperience, where they viewed the various components of the museum, met with volunteers, and chatted with the next generation of engineers and racing drivers. The museum brings the extensive heritage of Silverstone and British motor racing to life, celebrating the circuit and the country’s position at the heart of the global motorsport industry. It showcases the rich history of the sport, highlights amazing stories of many whom have been part of what makes Silverstone so special – which we hope, will inspire future generations to come. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might choose to lose their titles
Best Life Online previously said that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry might prefer to lose their royal titles “in the near future.” A source reportedly revealed that the Sussex couple wants to “distance” themselves from the British Royal Family, adding that the monarchy and Hollywood “do not mix.”
The couple may have used their titles, “Duke of Sussex” and “Duchess of Sussex,” particularly Meghan, for her Disney project. However, a new promo clip for TIME‘s 100 Most Influential People of 2020 introduces them as “Harry and Meghan.”
Reports then stated that this has since sparked more rumors that the Sussex couple might leave their royal titles behind “for good.” Later on, another source alleged that the Duke and Duchess have their own “timeline” and that they wanted to “play by their own rules.”
Megxit review in March
When the former working royals formally left the British Monarchy, official statements revealed that Queen Elizabeth placed them under a 12-month review. Several experts claimed that this decision only goes to show that the British Royal Family has not closed its doors on the Sussex couple.
But, if Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ultimately decide to relinquish their royal titles, many believe that this will become official on the expiration of their Megxit review.
