Prince Harry’s spending habits allegedly changed when he started dating Meghan Markle, and it caused a rift between him and Prince William, according to a new book.
Prince Harry grew up as a royal, and his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, is known for her frugality. However, the duke’s spending reportedly changed after meeting Meghan Markle, and it sparked tension between him and the other royals.
Prince Harry’s spending transformation examined
Investigative journalists Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett claimed in their new book Royal at War that Prince Harry’s spending habits became an issue for the royals.
The duke didn’t spend so much before meeting Meghan Markle. However, he allegedly changed shortly after being with the actress. The change caused the rift between him and the future king.
“Harry’s [spending] transformation is revealed as one of the fundamental factors behind the deep fissure that opened between him and his brother, Prince William,” the authors wrote as quoted by Daily Mail.
The book claims that Prince Harry got the spending bug after leaving Kensington Palace. He used to live next to Prince William and Kate Middleton but move out after his wedding with Markle.
Among his alleged excessive spending were the £6,000 for acupuncture as part of his “health drive.” The couple also enjoyed a three-night stay at Heckfield Place, a luxury spa in Hampshire that cost up to £33,000.
Meanwhile, The Sun also reported in 2019 that Prince Harry had guilty pleasures, which included expensive pedicures and massages.
“Harry and Meghan like regular treatments at Coworth and visited recently for pedicures and massages,” a royal source said.
The pedicure at the hotel starts at $61, while a deluxe massage costs $170 for 80 minutes. Those who served with Prince Harry in Afghanistan during his Army days laughed about it.
“Pedicures and massages? He’s changed!” one military source said.
“Harry used to be a proper bloke — dodgy dress sense, liked a drink and didn’t care how he looked,” a pal said.
Queen not happy with Sussexes’ expenditure
The book also claimed that the Queen was unhappy with the Sussexes’ excessive expenditures.
Even if Queen Elizabeth holds the highest position, the monarch only spends moderately. Thus, Prince Harry and Markle’s spending didn’t sit well with her.
“The fact that Meghan splashed so much cash rang alarm bells with the traditionally conservative Queen Elizabeth,” Howard and Tillett wrote.
“Growing up in the war left the monarch with a built-in sense of frugality and economy, despite being one of the richest women in the world.”
Kate Middleton warned Prince Harry about Meghan
The book also claimed that Kate Middleton warned her brother-in-law about dating Meghan Markle. The duchess reportedly reminded Prince Harry about their different lifestyles.
The royals and the former actress have a different life, past, and career, which need time, care, and attention to integrate. However, Prince Harry allegedly didn’t take those concerns lightly. Instead, he felt that the royals were not supportive of him and Markle.
