Prince William spoke up and defended the English soccer players from racism attacks but not all were impressed, a report says.
Prince William, Kate Middleton and their eldest son, Prince George, cheered England at the Euro 2020 Final. However, Italy beat them and the Black players from the team endured racism attacks prompting Prince William to speak up.
Prince William supports Black English players
Prince William took to Twitter and slammed the racist abuse aimed at the Black soccer players on England’s national team. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka received flak after they missed penalty kicks.
“I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match,” he wrote on Twitter. “It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behavior. It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable.”
However, Prince William’s statement raised some eyebrows especially that he remained mum when his sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, was attacked by trolls. Several questioned why he has only reacted now and did not stand to defend Prince William’s wife.
Twitter slammed William over racism statement
It’s not a secret that the Sussexes and Cambridges are often pitted against each other. Many were disappointed when Prince William and Kate Middleton did not speak up for Meghan Markle amid the attacks aimed at her.
Several experts stressed that the members of the royal family do not comment on such issues. Also, they are known for their “never complain, never explain” mantra. So, several Sussex supporters were irked when the Duke of Cambridge released a statement to support the athletes.
One netizen said Prince William’s words would have legitimate credibility if he had condemned the racist abuse aimed at his sister in law Meghan and nephew Archie. The user claimed that his silence and complicity fueled what he condemn at the present.
A different online user said she appreciated Prince William speaking out about the racist comments towards the athletes. However, the same netizen questioned why he didn’t do the same for Markle when she was bullied and contemplated in ending her life.
A third netizen was happy that Prince William was eventually speaking up about the issue. However, the online user believed it would have better if he started speaking up when Markle was targeted by the press.
Meghan Markle told Oprah Winfrey that the attack was too much that she contemplated harming herself. However, she didn’t pursue it because she didn’t want her husband, Prince Harry, to lose another woman in his life.
