Princess Charlene of Monaco was among those who supported Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship when it was made public.
Princess Charlene had just reunited with her husband, Prince Albert, last month. She was forced to stay in South Africa for six months due to ENT infection that needed corrective surgeries. Unearthed pictures showed that the royal supported Prince Harry’s relationship with Markel after it leaked to the public.
Princess Charlene accompanied Prince Harry on an outing
Princess Charlene and Prince Harry were photographed together in 2016 two weeks after the royal prince’s romance with Markle was leaked to the Sunday Express. Both attended the England vs South Africa rugby match at Twickenham Stadium.
Markle was expected to join Prince Harry in the match. It was supposed to be their first public appearance. However, he went with Prince Charlene, instead. Princess Charlene represented South Africa’s Olympic swimming team at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
They were pictured smiling as they stood together next to each other on the stands after the match.
Prince Harry’s sighting with Princess Charlene came after he released a statement saying he was worried about Markle’s safety. According to the duke, she was subjected to a “smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”
Prince Albert criticized the Sussexes interview with Oprah Winfrey
While Princess Charlene seemed friendly with Prince Harry five years ago, her husband disapproved of the Sussexes interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for a CBS special that aired in March.
In the interview, they made various revelations including a member of the royal family raising concern over their unborn son’s skin color. The allegation sparked racist accusations against the royal family. It also made the public think that the Sussexes and the royal family are at odds.
Prince Harry also revealed in the interview that his dad, Prince Charles, cut them off financially when they decided to step back from their royal duties.
For Princess Charlene’s husband, those types of displays of dissatisfaction should have been discussed in intimate quarters and not on a TV show. He admitted that the Sussexes’ interview bothered him “a little bit.”
Prince Albert was empathetic toward the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. However, he still doesn’t support them making their complaints on TV.
“It wasn’t the appropriate forum,” he said about them speaking concerns on TV.
