Princess Diana and Prince Charles tied the knot a few weeks after their first date. Despite the brief dating period, the couple decided to marry each other and later became the Prince and Princess of Wales.
In the early years of their relationship, reports said that the couple looked happy. However, things began to change between them after Prince Harry’s birth.
Royal experts said that the Princess of Wales was very “unhappy” with her marriage. But, Prince Philip gave her an “ultimatum,” according to the Daily Express. He reportedly “threatened” his daughter-in-law to either “fit in or get out,” leaving her two sons behind.
An updated version of the bombshell biography, Diana: Her True Story, royal author Andrew Morton revealed that Princess Diana and Prince Philip exchanged letters. He claimed that the Duke of Edinburgh disapproved of the late Princess’s actions in allowing the book to expose her “sham marriage.”
He reportedly wrote her a letter, directing the late royal to “maintain the dignity of the Crown.” This left the Princess of Wales “devastated,” causing her to declare to a friend that she is “out.”
Morton said that Prince Charles’ first wife “ignored” all the advice given to her and slammed back the Prince Consort. She sent him a letter, reminding him that she is the mother of the future King of the United Kingdom.
She made it clear in her tone that she was about to leave the Prince of Wales. Prince Philip “backed down” for a while and treated the late Princess “with more respect,” the royal expert added.
Despite backing down, tensions immediately bubbled again. This time, though, Prince Philip did not back down and even allegedly “shouted” at Princess Diana. He told her that the British Royal Family would be better off without her.
Andrew Morton continued that the Duke of Edinburgh then gave the Princess of Wales the “final ultimatum,” noting that he let her daughter-in-law pick either to “fit in” or “face exile without her children.” Although she wanted to be free, she could not leave her sons. So, she chose to stay for a while.
A separate report from the Daily Express details the events before the Prince and Princess of Wales announced their separation. It says that the couple went on a royal tour in South Korea, wherein they received the nickname, “the glums.”
The publication explained that they obtained the nickname because of how they looked during the tour. Weeks after the trip, Princess Diana and Prince Charles made it known before the public that they were officially separating. As the late royal set up her own court at Kensington Palace, the Prince of Wales relocated to Highgrove.
