PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is offered as free-to-play starting today on Steam. It is also being offered at a big discount.
PUBG Corporation just released an unexpected offer of allowing players to play its Battle Royale classic for free. This, unfortunately, is a limited time offer only as the free-to-play promotion will end after the weekend.
Nevertheless, those who would like to continue their chicken dinner streaks can buy the game at a big discount of 50% off on Steam as well. The discount will only last until June 8.
The PUBG Free Weekend
The BR game’s makers took it to YouTube to announce “PUBG Free Weekend,” and avid followers were quick to notice that the 28-second video garnered over 3 million views in only a span of a few minutes.
The announcement was so sudden as there was no formal press release issued beforehand, only on the day of the launch itself. On its YouTube video description, it says, “#PlayApartTogether with PUBG and Steam! From June 4th to 8th, PUBG is Free To Play and 50% off.”
The “Play Apart Together” is a campaign that many gaming giants supported amid the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. Ubisoft started with the cause last April, giving away Rayman Legends first, followed by its noted Assassin’s Creed franchise series.
Other game publishers followed suit, showering the gaming community with free game titles here and there. Accordingly, the Play Apart Together campaign was spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO) with more than 60 gaming companies participating, including Activision, Microsoft, and Sega—to name a few.
Free-to-play details
The Battle Royale game title is now ready to freely play; all players have to do is just log in on Steam, look for the game, click on “Play Game,” and let it install. There’s no need for any purchase nor other microtransactions required.
The PUBG “Play Apart Together” started on June 4, 5:00 p.m. UTC and it will end on Sunday, June 8, at 5:00 p.m. UTC, per its official announcement.
Everything in the game will be accessible and playable, including its recently released Ranked Mode, except the in-game store for those who don’t own the game yet. PC Gamer highlights that this is “a good time to dip in” on the Battle Royale classic because of its latest updates.
Aside from going live with the Ranked Mode, the devs have also launched the “heavily revised version of the Vikendi.” The revision comes with the ability to hop on trains—using it as a form of transport. One of the trains—the Dinoland-themed—nabbed a prettier look as well.

The game is also available on PS4 and Xbox One, but it wouldn’t be free to play. The limited promotion is for PC only.
