Queen Elizabeth II is unlikely to abdicate despite rumors claiming that she was planning to give up the throne.
Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning monarch. There are speculations that she is planning to abdicate due to her age. However, several sources also claimed that it’s unlikely to happen.
Queen Elizabeth abdication plan rumor
Last year, New Idea published a report claiming that the Queen was already preparing to abdicate after last year’s Trooping the Colour. Last year’s celebration was low-key due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton said in a previous interview that the coronavirus pandemic has “practically put” Prince Charles “on the throne.” Due to the report, New Idea speculated that the Queen was already planning to pass the crown to the heir apparent.
It has been a year since the article was published and a lot of things have changed in the royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to the United States. They have been actively doing interviews and docuseries about mental health. Prince Philip passed away in April. Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been expanding their social media reach and are already on YouTube.
However, one thing remains — Queen Elizabeth II is still dedicated to his role in the monarchy. She remains the reigning monarch. Thus, Gossip Cop debunked the report claiming that the Queen was planning to abdicate.
What did Andrew Morton say in the interview?
Due to the lockdown at the time, Andrew Morton speculated that it would take time for the Queen to carry out her engagements. He felt that it would take a long time before Queen Elizabeth II could resume her role because the elderly were at high risk of the coronavirus. At the time, she has to keep away from the public as it is too risky for her to meet people.
“The brutal truth is that her reign is effectively over. COVID-19 has done more damage to the monarchy than Oliver Cromwell,” Morton said. “Corona has practically put Charles on the throne.”
Queen Elizabeth has no plans to abdicate
The speculations about Queen Elizabeth II abdicating the throne are very unlikely to bear out. Royal historian Hugo Vickers told The Guardian in April that, unlike the other European monarchs, Queen Elizabeth II is “an anointed Queen.”
According to him, Her Majesty made a pact with God during her coronation that she will serve until her last breath. With the Queen’s dedication to the monarchy, it is very unlikely to happen.
“And if you are an anointed Queen you do not abdicate,” Hugo said.
