Resident Evil 4 has gotten a virtual reality treatment and will run exclusively on the Oculus Quest 2 platform.
There has not been a title in Capcom’s catalog that has seen multiple iterations as much as Resident Evil 4. Initially, the game was released on the GameCube on 2005, which was then followed by a PS2 port several months later. Two years later, in 2007, the horror title soon found the PC and the Wii as its new homes. Then, going for the same on the PS3 and Xbox 360 several years later, in September 2011.
With continuing releases, the game soon saw mobile as a viable platform, launching on them on January and April of 2013. A year later, the game was given a high-definition treatment that gave Resident Evil 4 HD on Windows. In 2016, RE4 saw a re-release, but on both PS4 and Xbox One. Its most recent release, however, is on the Nintendo Switch, back in 2019.
Official announcement
For a while, talks had been also about the prized Capcom title getting a remake. That was, until a more recent announcement came, suggesting that the game is getting a VR iteration. And, now, Capcom is officially announcing it to the public—and comes with a release date to boot. Alongside the proclamation, a short video is also introduced showcasing how the game looks like in first-person view.
It does not take much out of one’s imagination to perceive what a third-person horror title would be like in VR. In RE4 VR’s case, it’s a matter of taking out the image of the protagonist and putting players directly in his lens. The result of which is something that’s familiar, yet fresh, especially among diehard RE4 fans. Consequently, experienced VR players can also anticipate the intimate hands-oriented, full-motion movement taking place in-game. Also, the game appears to take advantage of a teleportation system for quality-of-gameplay improvement.
Some modifications
But the VR treatment is not just about shifting visual perspective, however. Additionally, some parts of the game also saw re-design as well to fit the game’s altered looks. Particularly, in how Leon would act according to player inputs with his arsenal or items, or when dealing with puzzles. For instance, players would be hands-on in seeing the protagonist reload his gun’s munitions and how he fetches items from his pocket.
Resident Evil 4 VR will run exclusively on Oculus Quest 2 and will release on October 11, 2021.
