Capitalizing on the success of its MOBA title, Riot Games is said to be developing a League of Legends-based Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game, according to a Riot Games exec.
Riot Games’ VP of IP and Entertainment, Greg Street, put word to the notion via a tweet, suggesting something “big” being in the works. Amplifying the hype, he also states that the project is something that many have been anticipating from the company.
I have news!
My recent job at Riot has been to help develop the League universe, which we’re going to need!
Because it is time. My new job is to kick off a big (some might say massive) game that many of you, and many Rioters, have been asking us to create.
PS We’re hiring

Street, who goes by the handler @Ghostcrawler on Twitter, coincides the announcement with a postscript about Riot hiring for the “massive” endeavor.
It is an MMO

The Riot executive’s tweet can be a little vague for some Twitter users, which requires clarification. One user, @RichelleLOL, went so far as to validate whether the project being talked to is an “MMO.” To which was responded with a reply inferring that “It is an MMO.”
A strong profile
Put in the hands of a veteran game maker, Street’s current disposition is a result of years-long tenure, performing multiple roles. Subsequently, it is creating a portfolio that spans a cornucopia of popular game titles.
Back when under the employ of Blizzard, he was a Game Designer and Lead Systems Designer on many World of Warcraft expansions. Namely, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, and Warlords of Draenor. The cumulative experience alone would be sufficient enough to give credence to Greg Street.
Prior to him dabbling in MMO, Street also spent a decade at Ensemble Studios, exposing him to the world of RTS. Taking on the role of a game designer, he played an important role in many “Age of Empires” and “Age of Mythology” titles produced by the company. Another RTS title he worked on for the exact same role is “Halo Wars.”
More from Riot Games
The revelation comes a week after Riot Games have showcased a slew of trailers during The Game Awards. Essentially, giving audiences a glimpse at what’s in store from the company. Which, quite surprisingly, includes an episodic animation that will play a crucial role in expanding the franchise’s universe.
Originally exclusive to PC, Riot Games has been hard at work at bringing its beloved franchise to other platforms. Such as with the mobile version with League of Legends: Wild Drift, which recently saw beta test in select regions.
Furthermore, the company also seems keen on expanding on the franchise further through the creation of titles based on the same universe, like the RPG spinoff title, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, which got a formal reveal last October.
