Robert Downey Jr. offers harsh reality to Tom Holland, Spider-Man role

Robert Downey Jr. unceasingly guides Tom Holland even outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As one of the pioneers of MCU, Robert Downey Jr. gave Holland what he should — and should not — expect about his future as Spider-Man.

During his interview with GQ UK, the Iron Man star recalled how Holland auditioned for Russo Brothers’ film Cherry. At the same time, he reflected on the young actor’s career in general.

“Look, Tom won’t be playing Spider-Man when he’s 37. At least I hope not. And when you’re in the MCU, there’s a feeling of all life beginning with it and ending it,” he said.

RDJ further explained that he went through what Holland is yet to tread on. In addition, he assured that there is life outside the MCU the actor should see, too.

He even mentioned Keanu Reeves, who he happened to have bumped into in Malibu days before the interview.

Like Robert Downey Jr., Reeves has also been part of numerous franchises, including The Matrix and John Wick, among others.

“I asked him what it felt like: ‘Like being in Australia.’ What I am saying is there was a Spider-Man before Tom Holland and there will be a Spider-Man after Tom Holland. That’s facts, Tommo. Sorry,” he went on.

The history of Spider-Man

Before Holland came, Sony Pictures Entertainment welcomed two actors to play the role in the franchise.

The first actor, Tobey Maguire, scored the role in 2002, becoming the first Peter Parker. He lasted until 2004.

Andrew Garfield then reprised the role after eight years for the 2012 and 2014 reboots.

Meanwhile, Holland debuted as the friendly neighborhood in Captain America: Civil War. He went on to lead the standalone films Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Despite the success of his films, he faced turbulence after The Walt Disney Company initially did not intend to bring the superhero to Disney+.

But thanks to Holland’s effort in talking with both companies secretly. In the end, Sony and Disney agreed to renew their terms afterward after bargaining with each other’s conditions.

After both parties became satisfied, they confirmed that Spider-Man is staying in the MCU.

As of the writing, Tom Holland and his team began filming his third film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. It will mark the last film before his contract ends. Still, he does not close the door to play the role again.
