Since launching in 2015, Psyonix’s Rocket League has been one of the most popular multiplayer games. Although its popularity has gone down a bit over the past years, it is still one of the most played titles. The recent news from the developers might even increase the player base even further.
According to the developers, the game will be free-to-play this summer. This is big news for the games community as there will be considerably more players to enjoy the game with. Of course, those who have been playing the game before it goes free-to-play will be rewarded.
Players who have been playing long before will be awarded the Legacy status, which will have a set of benefits. This includes access to all branded DLC released before a shift to free-to-play, a special title that says the year the player started the game, 200+ common items upgraded to Legacy quality, Golden Cosmos Boost, Dieci-Oro Wheels, and the Huntress Player Banner.
As a bonus, players of the game before the announcement will receive a special Faded Cosmos Boost.
The transition of the Rocket League into a free-to-play game means other things.
The developers have yet to dive into the specifics, but it revealed that the move to free-to-play means that there will be changes to Tournaments and Challenge systems as well. It is likely that these changes are made to accommodate those playing against others from different platforms.
Aside from that, the game will also have a cross-platform progression for players and their item inventory. By linking to an Epic Games Account, players will be able to transfer all of these, as well as their progression in Rocket Pass and Competitive Rank.
Once the game goes free-to-play, it will be immediately available on the Epic Games Store. The version on that platform will be the same as others and will have cross-play as well. Moreover, the game will no longer be available on Steam for new players once it goes free-to-play.
Rocket League going free-to-play is big news. It might even make the game bigger than it already is.
