The Exynos 880 SoC recently debuted with the release of the Vivo Y70s.
Samsung has officially revealed the Exynos 880 processor. It comes with an integrated 5G modem and packs almost as much power as last year’s Exynos 980.
A more affordable yet competitive solution
MediaTek and Qualcomm are already producing mid-range 5G chipsets, and Samsung is not to be outpaced. We have seen reports of powerful Exynos chips revamped to power the upcoming Galaxy Note 20. Still, this time Samsung takes a step back into the mid-range territory to provide a more affordable yet competitive solution.
Samsung’s newest chip is built with a 5G modem that can support up to 2.55Gbps download speeds and 1.28Gbps upload speeds. It also packs E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity that makes use of a 5G and 4G combo to boost download and upload speeds up to 3.55Gbps and 1.38Gbps, respectively.
Samsung’s Exynos 880 comes packed with processing power
Built using Samsung’s 8-nanometer FinFET process, the chipset makes use of an octa-core CPU sporting two ARM Cortex A77 cores running at 2GHz and six ARM Cortex A55 cores running at 1.8GHz for optimal performance.
It also packs the ARM Mali-G76 MP5 GPU which supports full HD+ displays and excellent 3D processing capabilities. The latter also translates to high refresh rates for games. The same octa-core CPU and GPU combo are also found on the chip to handle the processing.
The Exynos 880 has decent camera support for a mid-range solution
The Exynos 880 can also support a single 64-megapixel camera or a dual 20-megapixel camera setup. This is is where it mainly differs from the Exynos 980 that supports up to 108-megapixels on a single camera. The Exynos 880 chipset is also capable of 4K video recording up to 30 fps with H.265, H.264, VP9 encoding, and decoding.
Samsung’s new Exynos chip reveal gives us an idea as to which types of smartphones the chipset is designed for. The Vivo Y70s, also makes use of the Exynos 880 chipset, so we know it’s already mass-produced. Vivo Y70s comes with a 48-megapixel primary camera, an excellent gaming setup, and 5G connectivity, all being handled by the Exynos 880 chipset.
It’s only a matter of time until Samsung reveals its own mid-range smartphone that will take advantage of the capabilities of the chipset.
Apart from the Vivo Y70s, Samsung is yet to reveal as to which smartphones will soon get to be powered by the latest mid-range Exynos 880 chipset.
