'Scott Pilgram' game may be returning to Xbox and PlayStation stores

Ubisoft may have just teased the return of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game to the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Ubisoft’s playful response to Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley’s recent tweet might be a subtle hint at the return of the movie tie-in video game.

Mysterious delisting nearly six years prior

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was mysteriously delisted on December 30, 2014, from both the Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. No reason was given, though most people believe it was due to licensing conflicts.

During a recent re-screening of the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World movie held by The Academy, O’Mally posted a tweet asking for the return of the tie-in game.

While not explicitly stated, the tweet was obviously directed at Ubisoft, since they were the ones to publish the title.

Ubisoft’s official Twitter account responded to the post with a cryptic “considering” emoji, which could be a sign of the game’s return.

Reception of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game

Scott Pilgrim: The Game is a side-scrolling beat ’em up, featuring simple role-playing game (RPG) elements.

The game based on the movie and the graphic novel was unveiled during Comic-Con 2009 and was released a little over a year later on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

The 2D brawler was met with generally favorable reviews, as most gamers enjoyed the title’s retro look, feel, and sound. The game was criticized, however, for its questionable lack of online multiplayer and sometimes grind-y gameplay.

Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel

O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels consisted of six volumes, which were released over a span of six years. The series revolves around the titular character who’s based in Toronto and makes a living as a bassist in a band called Sex Bob-omb.

Scott eventually meets delivery girl Romana Flowers and immediately falls hopelessly in love with her. After a surprise fight with a stranger who turns out to be Ramona’s ex-boyfriend, she reveals that in order for her and Scott to date, he must first defeat six more evil exes.

The graphic novels achieved critical acclaim, with several publications voting Scott as one of the greatest comic book heroes of all time.

O’Malley also took home several awards for his work on the comic book series, such as the Doug Wright Award for “Best Emerging Talent,” and the Joe Shuster Award for “Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Cartoonist.”

Fans have been flooding Twitter since the O’Mally-Ubisoft exchange on May 21.

Here’s hoping Ubisoft isn’t just having some fun at Scott Pilgrim’s expense.
