SEGA is aware of Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis’s apparent lack of contents. But a plan is in place in order to address it.
July of 2021 was a momentous day for the Phantasy Star Online franchise, following SEGA’s release of New Genesis. Quite conspicuously, the installment sees dramatic improvement over PSO2, in terms of visuals and combat mechanics. But while the enhancements were indeed a cause of delight, fans weren’t necessarily happy with the game’s lackluster content.
Naturally, the issue has been a cause of buzz within the gaming community, and one that gathers the attention of the game’s developers. At the time, it was being dismissed as a launch issue. Meaning, the new title is meant to get contents over time, like any other live service game in the market today. But it has already been months since the New Genesis’s official launch, and yet the new contents remain to be seen. Essentially, causing worry among the fans who eagerly anticipated the release.
More contents to come
In addressing the issue, Sega community manager Hiro Arai answers questions for questions that have accumulated since the game’s launch. It comes via the PSO2 New Genesis Headline Report. As per Arai, New Genesis is actually slated for major updates, containing new stories and regions, but only every six months. This meant that the game’s additional contents are not scheduled to arrive until December this year. Obviously, making a stark contrast with PSO2, which is known to get updates on a more frequent basis.
“There is not a lot of playable content. Please update it more frequently, like you did with PS02,” said one commenter.
The fans’ unrest over the situation is understandable, however. Prior to this announcement, players have been dying to see something new with the game. Only to wait for months, without much word about what is happening or what’s to come and when.
Addressing the response, Arai reiterates how the company plans to release contents for New Genesis. But at the same time, he acknowledges the big issue that is inherent in having to wait long periods for new contents.
“They have taken your feedback and will make some significant changes based on that.”
Planned solution
As it appears, there’s already a plan to rectify the presented problem, which includes “higher volume of content”. That is, following the December update. Although, it’s not immediately clear whether that involves shorter waiting time in between releases.
“We do plan to further enrich the game, so we ask for your patience,” said Arai.
