Sega’s Company of Heroes 2 is free to keep over the weekend, which will include its single-player Ardennes Assault DLC for free too.
Company of Heroes 2 is one of Sega’s best 2013 offerings. The beloved game is one of the best World War II real-time strategy titles of all time. Sega is giving the game away for free this weekend on Steam, lasting until May 31.
COH2 was both beloved and controversial at the same time
Company of Heroes II was the sequel for the original 2006 game. The title follows the Soviet Red Army on the Eastern Front, as they push through several memorable events in the war.
The game came from Relic Entertainment, known for their expertise on RTS titles. These include games like Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, and even Homeworld.
Fans enjoyed the game at the time of its release in 2013, with the game receiving a decent 80 on Metacritic. Much of the praise for it comes from its solid gameplay and enjoyable story. Even then, the game was nothing short of controversial.
At the time, the title received criticism for its lack of historical accuracy. The game does not claim that it’s historically accurate, but the differences are glaring. Much of the story was deemed offensive to Russians that the country banned the game outright.
COH2 will have single-player DLC free, deep discounts on others
Company of Heroes 2 going free on Steam is quite the treat. Not only is the base game free, the DLC “Ardennes Assault” is also free until May 31. The DLC is quite enjoyable and adds a fair bit of single-player goodness to the title.
“Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault offers a compelling single-player campaign for the USF faction revolving around the Battle of the Bulge,” noted the game’s description.
“Engage in a dynamic non-linear campaign across the Ardennes landscape consisting of 18 scenarios, choose between three iconic companies, customize their abilities and bear the consequences of your actions as overall company health persists between missions.”
The original Company of Heroes title came from THQ. Even then, it was part of the IP they shedded during their 2012 bankruptcy proceedings. During this time, Sega acquired Relic under its umbrella, including Company of Heroes.
Sega is also offering a wider sale on Steam for Company of Heroes, including the entire bundle and DLC. For example, COH 2: The British Forces will be 75% off, lasting until June 4.
The entire Company of Heroes 2 Franchise Edition will also have a full 75% off on many of its DLC. The freebies will last until May 31.
