Netflix’s upcoming series about the famous Latina singer, Selena Quintanilla, will reportedly feature a young Beyoncé.
The streaming platform greenlit the show, Selena: The Series, in December 2018 with the Quintanilla family as producers. The Walking Dead actress Christian Serratos will play the iconic Mexican-American singer, who became Tejano’s biggest superstar, until she died in 1995.
Reports from That Hashtag Show revealed that another superstar would be featured in the biographical drama. Production released a casting call for an 11-year-old Black girl who has dreams of becoming a singer. Her name? Beyoncé.
Alongside her is a casting call for a 40-year-old Black American woman, who will play the girl’s mom. The call sheet stated that the woman, named Tina Knowles, will take her daughters to the mall and see Selena.
The casting call also includes a profile of a 31-year-old Whitney Houston. While it’s unclear if Selena and Houston met or worked together, they reportedly openly said how much they are fans of each other’s work.

When Beyoncé met Selena
According to Hola magazine, Beyoncé has an old MTV clip as a rising star where she talked about watching the legendary Latina singer at a mall in Houston.
“I met Selena at the Galleria Mall in Houston. But I didn’t say much to Selena because I wasn’t famous back then,” Beyoncé said. “I just saw her, greeted her and continued on my way.”
Beyoncé also said that she grew up listening to Selena’s songs on the radio. While she didn’t understand some of the lyrics, the pop superstar said that the Latina’s music helped her when it was her turn to make music in the studio.
“I think she was a legend and I admire her,” Beyoncé said.
Show’s casting details and release date
Apart from Serratos, Ricardo Chavira will also feature in Selena: The Series as her father, Abraham. Gabriel Chavarria, Noemi Gonzalez, Seidy Lopez, and Madison Taylor are also in the show as the rest of the family members.
Netflix plans to release part one of the show this fall. Chris Pérez, the singer’s widower, is not involved with the Selena: The Series. According to Entertainment Weekly, Perez and the Quintanillas have a contentious relationship even after the star’s death.
This is not the first project about the famous Latina singer. In 1997, Jennifer Lopez starred in the biopic about the Tejano singer with Edward James Olmos and Jon Seda. Warner Bros produced the movie that did pretty well at the box office.
